Another fine contribution to Tarot history from R. Place

Building on work begun in The Tarot: History, Symbolism, and Divination, Robert Place offers the story of his search for meaning in the work of the alchemists, the ancestors of today's doctors, chemists and physicists. By weaving his personal story in with the information he has unearthed, he creates a compelling narrative that has the excitement of detective fiction woven with a respectful and careful examination of historical clues.

The alchemical view, "that the world, including rocks and minerals, is alive and that all living things share a common purpose--the desire or need to evolve into a higher state of being" is likely to resonate with readers in search of meaning in an increasingly detached and digital lifestyle. His narrative includes, as we would expect, an examination of the hermetic tradition, but it also draws lines connecting Jung, the Rosicrucians, and modern physicists in a section Place labels a "revival" of alchemical interest.

The book adds new information to our search for the origins of Tarot, features Place's extraordinary work in examining the drawings and artwork in museums and libraries, and includes a detailed explanation of the work and meaning underlying Place's The Alchemical Tarot.

Finally, for me, the most important contribution he makes is the careful teasing-out from the alchemical history of a process of self-transmutation and the inclusion of exercises that the modern reader can adopt that will facilitate that same process in all of us.

Wonderful scholarship on the historical background of Tarot!

Most books about Tarot lack nuance and a fine sense of the history of visual culture. Robert Place is a visual artist who has mastered not only the visual range of Renaissance history but also writes splendidly about the philosophic movements, religious issues, and psychological practices of visualization as they run through Western history. He is peerless in his treatment of active imagination.as he traces it from ancient Egyptian embalming practices through alchemy and the neo-Platonic Hermetica. Most books dismiss the ancient Egyptian origins of Tarot as a 17th-century myth. Robert Place makes a very strong integrated argument about the intuitive aesthetic continuity of Renaissance Tarot with ancient mystery practices going back to Egypt via Alexandria, the Hermeticists, alchemists, and Neo-Platonists. If you know enough history to have sensed such connections but felt the evidence is lacking, you will find an excellent argument here in Place's book.

On top of all the well-digested but not in-your-face scholarship, this book presents and discusses the images the author-artist created for the Tarot deck known as "The Alchemical Tarot." The images from this deck embody the argument of his book and show how his handiwork can deeply integrate his argument by producing a highly readable and functional Tarot deck. Each card is treated as an object for meditation and the rich symbolism is discussed with eloquence and careful scholarship.

The last third of this book comments on each of the 78 cards of Robert Place's "Alchemical Tarot" deck. The commentary goes far beyond other Tarot commentaries. Place's comments encapsulate for each card image everything he has written earlier in the book about the history of alchemy, Neo-Platonism, Hermetics, and active imagination. Every sentence resonates richly with his awareness of the deep symbolism of tradition. In this way, Robert Place reinvigorates the tradition, as if he possesses the Philosopher's Stone that can inject fresh life into dead matter. This is a book by a true wizard in which every sentence prompts renewed attention to images and where each image becomes a door to enter for personal meditation and for work of the heart.

In short, this book is a gem that deserves to be widely known. Our culture should only deserve to appreciate what the author has put into this book.

Don't think for a moment that this is just another Tarot book or another Little White Book on "just another Tarot deck."

A wonderful, very detailed book for those interested in Alchemy and the Tarot. Now that Ive read it, I must read it again! Not a book you can just read through and bam you're done, this book requires working with the tarot in tandem with this book. Ive read it and will be working with it for a while. Definitely recommend.

This beautifully written gem should be required reading for anyone who feels they understand the Holocaust. Ursula Duba is brutally honest in her portrayal of "civilized" behavior in difficult circumstances. This book will take your conscience on a difficult trip by showing us that we are all responsible for protesting injustices in the world around us.

TALES FROM A CHILD OF THE ENEMY by Ursula Duba compels us to realize that the past is a state of mind. She carries us back into her childhood in post-war Germany, and then quietly returns us to the present. There, through our own time, Duba again carries us back, this time further and deeper and into the psyches of those who were witness to the inhumanity of the Third Reich. We realize that the events of another time and another place envelop and profoundly affect the way our present is seen and tolerated by certain individuals, people whom we might very easily know. We come to realize that their struggle, their understanding, and their insights can have profound influence on the world around us. That this is true, especially for those of us who presumed that our realtionship to the events of WWII and the Holocaust were non-existent or at least, very distant, is stunning. We are inescapably drawn into Duba's mind and heart by the deceptively conversational tone of her poems, by her easy description of events and issues which so quickly become as familiar to us as the events in our own lives. The lives of others and the "then" which has impacted so strongly upon them today, becomes a part of our own lives, our own now

Extraordinarily honest, courageous and sensitive!

In reading Duba's book, my first inclination was to be suspect of this German gentile who had the audacity to portray the Jewish experience of the Holocaust, but as I read the sequence of story poems that, like blocks, built a picture of the complex, multi-layered experience of all the participants, I began to soften and ultimately came over to join her in viewing the experience from her vantage point. Duba is brutally honest with herself, requiring me too, to examine my prejudices and stererotypes. Her courage to face herself and to face up to others gave me the encouragement to examine my experience, to face down some of my haunting demons and the manadate to speak out. - Second generation Holocaust survivo

While I was working on this book, CBS 48 Hours Mystery was working on their one hour show featuring the same case. We often sat next to each other in court and I can even be seen in their footage at times.� Their episode became "Diary of a Showgirl." It is available on line in full. It's a remarkable hour of TV in that the defendant was given access to a TV camera in her jail cell--many people who saw it air remember the woman in stripes whimpering her misery into the camera.� This book fills in details....and covers what happened after the episode aired.

I went to jail myself and interviewed the defendant for months. I also was privileged to have the support of the victim's family and they have attended my events and purchased extra copies of this book.�

This case has many twists and turns. I've done my best to bring you into this world, present the facts...and let the reader decide who is telling the truth.

Couldn't put it down!

The book had arrived...I went to the first page and started reading from the beginning.... (keep in mind I really don't like reading long stories). I read and I read, turning each page faster as I went... chapter after chapter ... till finally at about 3 something AM, my eyes could not stay clear, the salt in my tears was making my eyes burn...I was so exhausted. I put it down, just as the Judge was about to begin the sentencing phase.... at about 7:30 I awoke , grabbed the book with the page marked with an envelope, and started reading.... I finished it about 8 something.... I will not bore you with my "how many times I cried" or "how many times I was disgusted, fearful she could get off" ... I can tell you, this was "one heck of a book!" I highly recommend this book, just keep in mind, its a TRUE STORY. Sad, very cold, heartless, selfish woman who had it ALL, is now where she belongs. As someone who knew Marjorie many years ago, I will say she finally got what she deserved. This book was very well written by a talented writer, who had me glued from page 1... that says alot! Enjoy!

So Satisfying

There's a large body of work that, it seemed, doesn't exist anymore: scorching hot action and true love. It was around before the late 1980's, but then disease came and devastated our community. In its wake, that disease left a culture of spurning love, embracing bitterness, and taking good sex where it could be found--if it could be found--because there was no such thing as "forever," anymore. I found this short work to be a delightful return to the porn that I grew up on in the 1980's. Showcasing hot men who not only want each other, they *want* each other is a much-missed quality. I am so pleased to see that it has returned.

One of the chief eat tools that our enemies have had at the beck-and-call has been the fact that even our own stories tell of a gay life wrought in misery, loneliness, rejection, and "the wages of 'sin'." That pieces like this exist--hot, unrelentingly gay and kinky, but imbued with true love that tugs at the heart--takes that weapon away. It is natural to be gay, it is ok to be into what you're into so long as no one is harmed, and it is healthy and worthwhile to risk truly being loved.

I just loved this story. Bravo!

Needed more depth to satisfy me

PROS:
- This is a kink I haven’t read much about, and I enjoyed seeing something so out of the ordinary.
- Jack’s actions are written in such a way that he is portrayed similarly to a skittish horse, which I found fascinating.
- At first, I was apprehensive about the fact that Jack’s former partner arranged to have Jack immersed in such an unfamiliar situation without his permission. But the author alleviated my concerns quickly with a few well-timed comments about how it was the man could have known that the arrangement was something Jack wanted.

CONS:
- The story felt a bit claustrophobic to me in that there are almost no secondary characters. Once Jack gets dropped off at the barn, it’s just him and Daniel. I think seeing some other people who are into the same kink would have gone a long way toward alleviating Jack’s anxiety over what he considers to be an abnormal longing in himself. On top of that, there’s very little depth to Daniel because the story is short, it’s told from Jack’s POV, and there aren’t any in-depth conversations through which we see the men really getting to know each other.
- Much as I enjoyed reading about a kink with which I’m mostly unfamiliar, the level of detail was frustratingly sparse for me. Daniel says at one point, for instance, “You’re clearly a colt. That, I gleaned for myself, though, he’d put in ‘colt/pony boy’. You’re a colt, though, through and through…” and then Jack thinks, “I don’t even know what the difference is.” Well, I didn’t know the difference between “colt” and “pony boy” either, and the story never explained it to me.

Overall comments: There’s the start of something interesting here, but 708 Kindle locations isn’t enough to adequately explore a kink that’s brand new for someone, especially if his initial exploration of that kink is a full 2 weeks of 24/7 immersion. I wanted to see a bit more of the exploration itself, but I also wanted to see what happens when the characters go back to their everyday lives.

Sean Michael's "Pony Play" is book #3 from the standalone series Sealed with a Kink. And what a kinky little filly this was (I have so many bad horse jokes, it's not even funny...okay maybe a little)

This story is filled will pony play, penis piercings and enemas, oh my! I will admit this is not my first prance around the pony play paddock. However there was great equipment detail that I looked into deeper on a pony play fetish website...it helps visualize the bits, harnesses, etc.

Jack is sort of kidnapped onto a kinky two week vacation by his ex-lover. His ex leaves him with groom/Master Daniel at a BDSM/pony play training stable. (Side note: The MC's names are Jack and Daniel...LOL) I had to suspend reality and take a trip off the reality trail for a moment of two. Why? A grown man is sort of kidnapped and left with a stranger to participate in an act that he did not consent to? There were minor quibbles but he just went along with it...I neighed with disbelief during those moments.

While suspending reality with my treats of apples and carrot sticks (a true pony boy diet), Jack and Daniel played in some yummy scenes. Harnesses and nipple piercing and reins...Jack learned he was a true pony boy/sub in this 24/7 lifestyle. All Jack wants is someone to call his own who will accept him kinks and all. Luckily, groom/Master Daniel fit the criteria and was as unattached as Jack.

The story is less than 50 pages but was full on the kink. Kinksters will definitely nicker and neigh in kinky delight with this short. Don't expect too much depth or length. Do expect a couple of hot scenes.

"Pony Play" ends with a strong HFN/ light HEA ending. And I'd definitely wouldn't have minded a couple more chapters with the couple. It was a fun read, great for when you want a kinky snack.

Awesome book, definitely worth it.

I was so happy when i got this book, very speedy delivery. I had seen some scans of the book and was convinced this was a good buy, especially if you love soul eater. Its so worth it. The art work is amazing, they take up the all the paper so great sized work where you can see everything and the book is packaged nicely, great addition to any collection.

By using the analogy of a football “play” this book introduces four conceptual frameworks (a kind of close to the data intermediate theory) that brings coherence to all aspects of the research process. But empirical inquiry is not like playing football it is also like coaching football and inventing plays. Scholars should see themselves like football coaches who develop or find these frameworks (plays) as they work through the literature and define their research question. This “student-focused” book uses three examples from award winning student papers to illustrate each of the frameworks. The student’s story begins with finding a topic and then moves to recognizing critical literature, refining the purpose, developing and operationalizing a conceptual framework, choosing a method, analyzing data and presenting findings.

About the Author
Patricia M. Shields is a Professor of Political Science at Texas State University and the Director of the Master of Public Administration Program. She has edited the journal Armed Forces & Society since 2001. She has won numerous teaching awards for her work supervising student research. Her research interests include pragmatism and public administration, teaching research methods, women in public administration, and civil military relations. She is the author of Step-by-Step: Building a Research Project and has published over 60 articles and book chapters in Public Administration Review, Administration & Society, American Review of Public Administration, Armed Forces & Society, Journal of Public Affairs Education, Society, Journal of Graduate Teaching Assistant Development, Administrative Theory and Praxis, Public Administration Quarterly among others. Nandhini Rangarajan is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Texas State University. She earned a Ph.D. in Public Administration from the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, State University of New York at Albany. Her research interests are in creativity and innovation, public management, human resources and organizational behavior. Her articles have appeared in prominent public administration journals such as the Review of Public Personnel Administration, Public Productivity and Management Review and the Journal of Public Affairs Education. A must read for all graduate students

The book walks students through the entire process of research; from conceptualization of ideas to the various forms of research and the steps that need to be taken to produce a solid thesis or dissertation. I found the book extremely helpful to organizing my research activities and clarifying the conceptual framework that best fit my research. Without this book, it would have taken me a long long time to finish my project. In addition to its useful content, the book is written in a very simple-to-understand style. I highly recommend the book to all graduate students who are embarking on an empirical research to read the book before launching their projects.

Great Book for Guiding Large Scale Research Projects

The playbook is based on a set of conceptual frameworks, established for bringing coherence to the capstone applied research projects process in the master of public administration program at Texas State University. It has been applied to more than 300 students since it was first implemented, and continues to guide the production of high quality research. Shield's primary idea, taken from her studies in American pragmatism, is that "theory" need not be disconnected from practice, as students often find to be the case in academic settings. Rather, theories are useful tools that can bring coherence to a set of seemingly random observations. A theory can be just as useful to the research process, as "plays" are in football, hence the term "playbook". By paying careful attention to the development of intermediary theory (conceptual frameworks in research) one can make the process of research less indeterminate, more systematic, and most importantly, they can increase the quality of the research overall. As someone who used the process to write a 100 page research report myself, I recommend this book for anyone struggling to conduct sizable research projects (e.g. thesis, dissertation), especially for early unstructured qualitative research, but also for more determinate formal hypothesis testing.
