that this was actually a good book. My professor made us purchase this for a foklore class. He told us that it was not all that exciting, but I beg to differ. I found this to be an excellent leisure reading book as well as an excellent textbook for class. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in folklore.

This is a very well researched primary text for those interested in and/or researching American Folklore
By Masada36
Most simply and briefly put, this is a very well researched survey of articles for those interested in and/or researching the topic of American Folklore.

Allow me to provide a bit more detail with the hope it will aid other scholars and researchers in determining whether this would benefit your library:

The book, written by Jan Harold Brunvand of the University of Utah, was originally published in 1968 (the first edition, with which I am basing my review) and has served as an introduction to the topic for students and scholars ever since. The book was published by W.W. Norton & Company, Inc.

After the brief Preface, Abbreviations and Acknowledgments, the book contains the following sections and chapters:

I. Introduction
1. The Field of Folklore
2. The Study of Folklore
3. Bearers of American Folk Tradition

II. Verbal Folklore
4. Folk Speech and Naming
5. Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases
6. Riddles and Other Verbal Puzzles
7. Rhymes and Folk Poetry
8. Myths and Legends
9. Folktales
10. Folksongs
11. Ballads

III. Partly Verbal Folklore
12. Superstitions
13. Customs and Festivals
14. Folk Dances and Dramas
15. Folk Games

IV. Non-Verbal Folklore
16. Folk Gestures
17. Folk Music
18. Folk Architecture, Handicrafts, and Art
19. Folk Costumes and Foods

Appendices
A. The Taming of the Shrew Tale in the United States, by Jan Harold Brunvand
B. The Folklore of Academe, by J. Barre Toelken
C. The Types of the Southern Mountain Cabin, by Henry Glassie

--

In all, the book is 338 pages and thankfully has an Index as well as a short section of detailed notes.

After all these years, it is this text that has served as a primary introduction to the theme, and while there are other, newer specialized texts, this remains a fundamental point of reference in the conversation.

Highly recommended.

Book for College Course
By shayes
Had to order this book for my Folklore & Folklife class I am taking. Gives a very good overview on "folklore", and is definitely an easy read for everyone. It is a textbook, so it's not the most interesting thing in the world but is still very helpful.
