California was thrown into a paralysis of fear in 1969, distraught over the unsolved murders of the Zodiac killer. The Zodiac became the most elusive and frustrating adversary ever encountered by the law enforcement community in the San Francisco Bay Area. A series of letters, allegedly written by the murderer himself and published in local newspapers, only added to the mystery and panic. Over 30 years after he exploded onto the headlines of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Zodiac serial killer remains an enigma that is unparalleled in the history of crime in America, and the case remains unsolved. Violence expert Michael Kelleher and psychologist David Van Nuys attempt to provide a glimpse into the mind of this mysterious murderer.
Kelleher and Van Nuys reconstruct the crime scenes, delve into the records, and psychoanalyze the Zodiac's letters to newspapers and the law enforcement agencies. The facts of the case and the fragmentary glimpses of the Zodiac's psychodynamics that came through his letters forced the authors, reluctantly, to draw a conclusion that is sure to be controversial-namely, that the Zodiac suffered from multiple personality disorder. They also debunk many popular legends and myths about the case, laying out the limited facts that we do have on the notorious Zodiac.

"Michael Kelleher and David Van Nuys have combined journalistic and psychological skills to resurrect the Zodiac Case and give it new life. I was among the uniformed officers searching for Zodiac 30 years ago. Back then, we were never provided the kind of specific facts and theories so well compiled by Kelleher and Van Nuys, nor did we have these psychological profiling capabilities available to us. This excellent rendering of Zodiac's evil psyche could have made a difference. As it is, this deft analysis raises the possibility that the Zodiac may still be among us. We may get him yet!"-Alan W. Benner, Ph.D San Francisco Police Department 35 years service, retired as SFPD's Chief Psychologist

"Unless the Zodiac killer is finally apprehended or decides to resume his public personna, this is probably as close as we will get to a sense of what moved an individual both to such extremes of private violence and to such demands for public acknowledgment. Thanks to Kelleher and Van Nuys, a new generation is invited to puzzle over what drives an individual like the Zodiac." (Doug Davis, Haverford College)
"A thrilling detective story, one that many of its readers will not be able to put down. Kelleher and Van Nuys have done their homework in spades; the result is a book that explores those dark and dangerous dimensions of the human psyche that many people tend to ignore. The authors make a compelling case that the Zodiac was suffering from a dissociative identity disorder, in other words that 'multiple personalities' were involved in his crimes." (Stanley Krippner, Saybrook Graduate School)

Analyzing Zodiac.
By J.L. Populist
"This is the Zodiac speaking" is an investigation into the Zodiac killings.
What makes this book interesting is the psychological analysis by Mr. Van Nuys, chair of the Psychology Dept. at Sonoma state University.
A quote from page 6 lays out the objective of the book- "We will begin this fascinating journey with facts-solid irrefutable facts and nothing more."
With that in mind, the authors avoid speculating on the personal identity of the Zodiac killer.
The authors explain the differences in the Riverside and Zodiac letters. They make a compelling argument for different writers based on the style of the letters with a different emphasis. By that reasoning, the man who murdered Cheri Jo Bates was not the Zodiac.
The Santa Rosa hitchhiker murders were examined for possible links to the Zodiac. They seem to be un-related on various levels.
It's obvious from the aftermath of the Stine murder that luck played no small part in the Zodiac avoiding discovery and arrest. You get the sense that he never recovered from his close call with the SFPD immediately following the cab driver's murder.
"Overall,it appears that Zodiac was deteriorating psychologically and had now relegated himself to engaging in a strange fantasy dance with the media."-page 140.
The British language connection was intriguing. Although witnesses state that he had no accent, one has to wonder where that connection came from. Were one of his parents of British origin?
The change in tone in some of the letters, notably three from 1974,was examined. This "denoted a change in Zodiac's psyche that probably related to his ongoing and significant psychological disorder." He may very well have had two personalities. Another interesting theory has the change in tone as a positive result of therapy or medication.
This book doesn't solve the Zodiac killings, but it does shed light on the psychology and evolution of the killer.
After reading this book I have to wonder if Zodiac didn't succomb to suicide or by some means become more psychologically stable?
We may never know the answer. I recommend this book as a clear, sensible investigation of the Zodiac murders.

Great, with a few caveats
By Cornerstone
This is a refreshing book. What is absent is the lack of a pet suspect for a case grown cold. Also, unlike certain crime writers and profilers, the authors aren't egomaniacs who think they can deduce everything about the suspect from what little evidence we have. The authors instead offer informed, intelligent speculation. Their approach is intelligent and intellectual, but without the academic jargon which often just obfuscates issues and is a substitute for real-world analysis. I believe this is the best book I have ever read on an unsolved crime.
My only caveat, is that they are willing to buck the handwriting experts for no good reason. The 1978 letter, after briefly being considered as a possible genuine letter, was quickly and unanimously ruled a fake by handwriting experts. Even without handwriting analysis it should be obvious that it is fake from the content. For example, in the 1978 the author specifically mentions two individuals and spells their name correctly. In all real letters, people are always "the boy", "the girl", "the kiddies", "the editor", "the blue meanies", etc.--dehumanizing victims by not even acknowledging their names. In the real Zodiac letters he only addresses Avery by name and deliberately misspells it Averly. It is a shame that, for some unknown reason the authors chose the 1978 letter as genuine despite the handwriting and content contradictions. (And Kelleher, on one of the Zodiac websites, actually believes that a 1990 obviously fake postcard is real! This is a postcard handwriting experts dismiss, as it was written in pencil and traced over in marker. Also the "hesitation marks" in the writing are clear indications of forgery.) Just ignore anything either has to say on the 1978 and 1990 "Zodiac communications" and enjoy the most reasoned, balanced effort at unsolved, true-crime writing.

The controversy is compelling, the read is even better.
By Filo Barnesworth
I find it interesting how much controversy has been stirred up by this excellent book. ..The truth is that this is an excellent read. However, it takes a very different position on the Zodiac killer. In essence, the authors find that this killer was anything but a genius. He was, in fact, brutal, not particularly educated but naturally bright and manipulative. In othe words, much like one would expect from his crimes. However, this concept apparently upsets any number of alleged "Zodiac investigators" who consistently portray the killer as some kind of demigod of exceptional genius.
This point of controversy may lie at the heart of why this book has received so many glowing reviews and a few absolute "pans." It is clear from the "pans" that they were written by alleged "Zodiac investigators" who seem to hold fast to the killer as something special. This obviously flies in the face of what the authors of this book believe. It also would seem to fly in the face of common sense, at least from a law enforcement perspective.
Is is possible that by portraying the Zodiac killer as a rather ordinary, definitely sick, and clearly evil individual these "Zodiac investigators" have, themselves, been brought to a more mundane role? It would seem so.
This is an fine read, different, and definitely controversial. For those who have a closed mind about the Zodiac killer, or view themselves as the ultimate authorities about a crime that has never been solved, it can be unsettling. For those who want a better understanding of this killer, it's a must read.
