A great story about man's cruelty towards his dog

Other reviewers have rated this poorly, and I want to correct that. The story is not a happy one, as most stories with pets are. This tale of a dog, who tries to do as his mother would do, saves the life of his master's baby and is abused by the father who is a scientist. The dog has a puppy of his own, and the puppy is used as an experimental dog by the scientist and put to sleep and buried. The dog, knowing that when you bury seeds they grow into something beautiful, hopes and waits for his baby's growing since the puppy too was buried in the soil.

The tale itself is about the cruelty that man and science had towards dogs at the time, and it's not for the faint of heart. It's also a testament to Twain's writing that he can take the tale of inhumanity towards Man's best friend and spin it into a heartbreaking narrative.

One of the great ones. . .

Near the end of his life, Twain wrote stories that expressed his contempt for the cruelties, stupidities, and general brutishness of mankind. In this story, which goes well with The Mysterious Stranger, he contrasts man with dogs. Dogs have true morality and heroism, which doesn't stand a chance against man's "moral sense."

The reader who sees Twain as a children's author will be horrified at much of his work. Twain's humor is seldom meant to be jolly or forgiving. You can disagree with him (and hopefully survive the results of your naivite) but should not be surprised at what happens to the decent animals at the hands of humans.

Recommended as part of an excellent Twain collection Kindle is offering free (but stay away from the collections).

Can't get it out of my head

There are stories and then there are Dog Tales. Mark Twain writes early in the development of animal rights and he hits readers right between the eyes with his words through his character development. Spending a dollar on this moved more than a buck from my pocket book, it still rattles my soul as a positive dog trainer.

Well documented research to consider in pro-child policies

Eisenberg and Mussen's book is a refreshing look at what can go right with child development. The research and the ideas give professionals (teachers, mental health, social change advocates) and parents clear ideas about how to approach developing and encouraging prosocial, caring, sharing and empathic children. If many people, including politicians, seriously looked at the literature it would be much clearer about how to train and restructure institutions, schools, childcare centers and address world issues, and possibly what kind of refugee camps and IDP camps to fund and support. The uses of this kind of book could be profound or just shelved and forgotten.

A great, thought-provoking collection

Working from the rather simple thesis that "great literature...is a record not of the achievement, but of the effort," Gornick has produced nine critical and biographical essays that dissect and at times rebuke the personal weaknesses of her twelve male subjects. In all, the book is a thought-provoking exploration of how these weaknesses informed, and were informed by, each man's struggle to become more than "the other," to come to terms with his fellow man and--more important here--with women.

Gornick has a knack for artfully distilling the psychology of entire races (or of the male species itself) into critical judgments: Jewish-American writing at its best "fashions the language anew precisely so that it can express what it feels like to be ill," emotionally, mentally, and socially; colonial-born writers like V.S. Naipaul are "sealed off" from organic society, bound to the task of "relentlessly accusing humanity of being the sum of its disabilities." Men in general are subject to the same anthropological treatment when Gornick judges them to be excessively sentimental or small-minded. For Hemingway's descendants--Raymond Carver, Richard Ford, and Andre Dubus--the sight of "men and women struggling together in dumb erotic need arouses...an astonishing capacity to respond to the desolation of ordinary lives." This response, however, is stunted by each man's refusal to see the two sexes as fighting the same existential battles. Gornick has great empathy for "the other," as she makes clear in her preface, but this empathy does not extend to writers' whose work never escapes a narrow worldview, whether it be one limited by race or by sex.

The favorite men in Gornick's life--the novelists George Gissing and H.G. Wells, essayist and anthropologist Loren Eiseley, literary critic Randall Jarrell--are praised not just for overcoming their personal weaknesses, but for groping toward an understanding of "men-and-women-together." These four are spared both the indictments and the tendency toward generalization found in the more critical essays. In these pieces--which make up the first half of the book--we are treated to fuller portraits of the writers and their flaws: Wells' devouring sexual need, Eiseley's extreme aloofness, Jarrell's obsession with aging. We learn how these flaws shaped their work and their relationships: with women, with art, with the world. Perhaps most importantly, these four men illicit a personal response from Gornick that's lacking in the rest of the book. Her enthusiasm left me itching to read Gissing's "The Odd Women" and Wells's autobiography.

"The Men in My Life" is a solid addition to Gornick's work. She clearly cares deeply about literature and believes in its ability to bridge the gaps between men and women, author and society, writer and reader. In most of these essays--especially those about men who managed to narrow these divides--her feeling is quite contagious.

An amazing compendium of essential knowledge

Mr. Darkwood's writing never fails to impress. In this volume, he presents motoring as a complicated and delightful metaphor for Kantian Eulogistics. His intricate similes and linguistic perambulative constructs never fail to delight the mind. On its most simplistic level this tome instructs the driver in basic motoring skills, and it can be read that way by those who wish to paddle in the shallow end of the pool. However, discerning readers will perceive (according to their degree of spiritual evolution) that this work is about so much more. In fact, this is a work of moral instruction, a modern day Pilgrim's Progress. It is the one volume a caring parent who is about to perish at sea should give to his or her child. At the very least, read Chapter 7 backwards for some yummy kabob recipes. Enjoy!

Sharon Salzberg, a meditation teacher and the founder of the Insight Meditation Society in Massachusetts, focuses on a kind of Buddhist practice that emphasizes feelings of love, happiness, and compassion. Metta, or "lovingkindness," meditation involves four phrases: "May I be free from danger"; "May I have mental happiness"; "May I have physical happiness"; "May I have ease of well-being." (Some readers will find this surprising, since the most commonly known meditation techniques have little "content"--you simply repeat a single word or phrase, observe your breath, or observe your thoughts as they pass through your mind.) Other exercises in this book are intended to increase your connection to and intimacy with others, by directing these positive sentiments outward toward specific people or the world in general. Led me to have more goodwill, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity

I rated this based on the results and not based on how much I enjoyed the book. Just being honest when I say that plenty of the language just did not resonate with me. I recognize the author likely made an attempt to keep the flowery talk to a minimum but for a type A guy with an aversion to touchy-feely language some of it was hard for me to get through. That being said, I do think it nurtured the brahmaviharas in my own practice. So I am glad I read it.

Saved My Sanity and Soul

After a terrible freak accident that left me with a near-death experience, four days in a coma, a week in intensive care, a month in a rehab hospital after that, and then five months' bed rest at home, punctuated only by five painful and grueling hours of physical therapy per day and two supervised walks, I was in a nasty state spiritually and psychologically. Some abusive treatment and also medical errors at the various hospitals where I was treated left me blasted, detached, tentative, nervous, and with the feeling that I no longer understood the world or what my place in it might be. Various helpful trauma therapies and psychological assistance left me feeling better, but still very unattached, confused, bamboozled, and out of sorts. What was this world I was living in? How would I understand myself as a permanently disabled person? Why was I so numb and baffled all the time?

After several months of advice and searching, someone suggested Metta meditation to help me reconnect to myself and the world, and to help me feel safer. They suggested I buy this book, because Metta classes are hard to find. Long story short, it worked. Even just using the instruction in this book, and even without an actual teacher to guide me, I was able to get a practice going that made me feel better almost immediately. Just two short Metta sessions per day based on Ms.Salzberg's instructions (which was all the time I could physically spend sitting), was enough to restore my sense of myself, make me feel much more attached to the world, and to feel powerful despite my disabilities. Once this practice let me reconnect with my naturally loving and optimistic spirit, it unfolded fairly quickly that I felt deeply soothed and more secure every minute of every day.

I cannot recommend this practice more highly, and if you don't have a Metta teacher available to you, this book is the best place to get started. If you suffer from some kind of trauma, sense of unreality or inability to connect with others and the world around you, or some kind of severe emotional pain, this is the way to go. I think that for ordinary life stresses or spiritual development, insight meditation or Zen or some other kind like that might be fine, but if something really nasty has happened to you, or if something really unpleasing happened to you in the past that's eroding your ability to live a normal, happy life, Metta meditation is the way to go. Thanks to its clear, simple explanations and easy-to-remember mantra, this book is the place to go when you need to be healed.

A life-changing practice

I first experienced the practice of Loving-Kindness at a retreat at Insight Meditation Society, the meditation/teaching center in Barre, MA that Sharon Salzberg, Joseph Goldstein and Jack Kornfield co-founded many years ago. After the retreat and the experience of this practice, I bought this book and have shared it with many friends over the years. Learning to love ourselves first, before we can love another flies in the face of what many of us are taught by our culture. If we don't love ourselves first, how else can we bring to bear, and to share, all the love that we are? Sharon has unselfishly shown us what self-love truly means by bringing the Buddha's practice of Loving Kindness to the West. With gratitude, and at the risk of using a cliche, I can only say that this practice, and this book, have transformed my life.
