Helped me learn Perl quickly

Learned Perl quickly with this book.

I would do examples time to time. But most of the times, I looked it up when I got stuck.

It is a good learning tool for beginners and a nice reference for those who are good at Perl.

I suggest combing this book with a more traditional Perl programming book. It will create more synergy.

There's a 5th Edition, skip this one.

I'm disappointed by this book. At the beginning of Chapter 2, the book tells you that if you are new to programming then skip to Chapter 5. Hmmm... okay. So I finish Chapter 5 and I start to do the exercises at the end of the chapter when I notice that the examples are telling me to do things that weren't covered by Chapter 5 and I have no idea how to do. I flip back and double-check to confirm the book told me to skip to Chapter 5 and sure enough it does. Long story short, skipping to Chapter 5 is not correct, I should have only skipped Chapter 2 and not have skipped Chapters 2, 3, & 4 like it said to do. Okay fine, I go back and go through Chapters 3 & 4 and now I know how to do what the Chapter 5 Exercises are asking. At least I think I do, but I'm stuck on one part of one of the exercises and I need to look at the solution to the exercise on the cd that was included with the book for some help. I pop in the cd, browse the chapter folder and I only find the examples that are already written in the book. What I need is to see how the author solved the problem. That would give me a direction I could have gone to solve the problem myself but the solutions to the exercises are neither on the cd nor in the book itself. But not just that chapter, there are no solutions to any of the exercises at all. I checked the website, (informit.com/ph) and they're not there either, nor is there any errata but I know there most certainly is the massive error in Chapter 2 I spoke of earlier. I found another error in Chapter 5 in the explanation of one of the examples that said the value didn't exist in the hash when it clearly does. I'm only up to Chapter 5 so I can't imagine the errors that the remaining 15 chapter might have but I'm going to press on because I really want to learn perl and don't have the money to go buying more books. I can't recommend purchasing this one to anyone else though.

A book for newbie's, A reference for experts

After looking at a few Perl books, I chose Perl by Example as the text book for teaching a Perl class. Perl is a huge topic and while no one book can cover all the topics in the depth and details required for anyone's particular environment, the concepts were explained at sufficient levels providing one the terms and tools to investigate on the Web quickly for further study. The key component of this book that sold me was how the examples in the book were organized. The organization of the book provided the focus in the areas I needed. They provided all the material required for the class. For instance, when working through arrays, hashes and files all the information was at your finger tips. No bouncing around...it's all just right there.

The Quality isn't a good explanatory variable for the price

Actually I do think that this book is too expensive, it is not worth to buy it. It spends five chapter (167 pages), more than 60% of the book, to teach matrix algebra, reader can easy read the detail matrix algebra review from many econometric texts such as Greene and Johnston. I don't think this part is helpful. For the last three chapters, it just discuss the material about OLS, all of these can be easy found in some introductory econometric text. I don't think it is very useful for anyone to read this book before studying other econometic text.

Excellent Linear Algebra Review

Well, I was a student of Professor Dhrymes, so I am a bit biased as a reader. This book would be extremely helpful for a 1st year graduate course in Econometrics, as it contains many useful linear algebra results. I am glad it was reprinted, as we had had to use photocopies of the previous edition.

Best Book On Mathematical application in economics

I have done masters degree in MATHEMATICS and have done some management courses also. Here I am a PROFESSOR in a COLLEGE where students do B.SC. from LONDON university under EXTERNAL PROGRAM. One of the subjects I teach is "MATHEMATICS FOR ECONOMICS". This book has not only no alternate but also written in very simple way with technical examples and flow diagrams. My students last year got the DISTINCTION in this subject and this year I am also expecting DISTINCTION again from students. So I wanted to contact the auther and compliment the person. Finally as a teacher I would recommend strongly this book for the students of BSC. in Mathematics for economics as this book has a number of mathematical topics that are of great importance in the study of classical econometrics. And this is according to said syllabus.

About the Author

Bob Volman (1961) is an independent trader working solely for his own account. He is the author of Forex Price Action Scalping, a book widely acclaimed by active scalpers for its ingenuity and practical usefulness, and in steady demand since its first publication in 2011. A most lucid, thorough, engaging, and useful book on short term technical trading with actionable ideas.

Bob Volman's work stands out like a diamond in the rough amidst trading literature. For half the price of the usual offerings in this category, Volman not only delivers valuable discretionary technical trading ideas, but presents them in a way that is both responsibly thorough and extremely comprehensible - a tough challenge with any discretionary method.

Key points:
* A handful of technical strategies are presented: breakouts (including from sloping trend lines), breakout pullbacks, classic pullbacks, and range reversals (breakouts back inside of a range). The only technical tools used are trend lines and a 25 pd moving average.
* Critical technical context is given for each setup in numerous well articulated examples, separating good trades from bad, without cherry picking.
* Setups are designed for 'all-in, all-out' trading: a bonus for all one contract traders out there.
* Plenty of helpful notes are given to describe the psychological issues of dealing with particular setups and their management.

Key improvements that weren't in the prior book, Forex Price Action Scalping:
* The key time frame is 5 minute candles as opposed to the 70 tick chart, the former of which is much more popular (a number of tick chart examples are nonetheless included).
* There are extensive examples of sloping trend line breakouts as opposed to the classic horizontal line approach.
* A consecutive day by day analysis is given over the course of six months - something I have yet to see in any trading book.
* Volman discusses more extensive exit strategies including modifying profit taking positions, providing numerous examples thereof.
* An entire section is devoted to adjusting to low volatility conditions - another thing I have yet to see properly addressed in a trading book.
* The influence of different sessions is discussed (Asian vs Europe vs US).
* While the bulk of the focus is the EUR/USD currency pair, several other currency pairs are also presented in the low volatility section, as well as six examples from stock index futures (YM, NQ, ES).

Regardless of how good this book is on a first pass, it's critical to understand that it's not made for reading, but for re-reading. You're going to have to go out there and do your own research to make the approach yours, but that is necessary with any trading approach you read about - unless you're copying the code of an automated strategy.

Even if you don't follow all of Volman's technical ideas (for example I tend to be more of a counter-trend, failed breakout trader while Volman is more trend and breakout oriented), the most valuable thing this book and its predecessor can teach is the skill of reading into technical details properly and asking yourself the right questions as you design your own approach. This alone makes this book considerably more valuable than its numerous overpriced competitors. This is a book that is as much about concept as it is about content.

If you're a fan of Volman's work, you may also want to check out Forex Price Action Scalping. However, I suggest this book first, as it is a bit more rounded and provides an easier point of departure. Also, at the time of this writing there is an active group of Volman followers on the trade2win forum where one of the users posts Bob's annotated 70 tick charts every Sunday evening.

Finally a Price Action book for those who really want to learn it.

I've read about 1/2 of the book. It does take time to absorb the material so i figure my first read will take another week or so. This book is written for those who decide not to take the shortcut of loading the chart with indicators using someones trading system. I am guilty of this myself moving from one system to another until I just gave up for a while. I had read part of Bob's first book but following a 70 tick chart just wasn't for me. This book really goes into the meat of what price action is. Some authors identify pure candle stick theory as true price action. I don't think so. I went through all that stuff and it doesn't work. The same can be said for automated robots. If robots really worked so well then why hasn't some institutional firm with deep pockets just written one and sucked all the money out. Anyway as Bob explains in the book the purpose of spending the time to study price action and really study it is to fully understand the probability of a successful trade but even more important is when NOT to take a trade. Too many traders take trades that are just wishful thinking or out of pure boredom.

Once i finish the book I'll update this review with some more analysis and possibly some trading results by applying the information. I can say that what I've learned so far has made me look at the charts in a completely different way. This is probably the best book I've read on forex trading and I highly recommend it.

Best PriceAction Material I have come across

I had my reservations when I saw this book but after going through much of it I think I understand Price Action trading better than I used to. I am giving it 5 stars because it gave me more than it promised it would.
first of all the approach was from an angle I never saw Price Action trading: break outs!
Most books and gurus talk about price action as if its all about chasing pin bars and other reversal patterns with their funny names. His idea is to watch out how the battle between the bulls and the bears are as one group launches an attack and how he other group defends the region of contention. The encounter would surely have a loser and a winner with the loser adding to the pressure as they exit their positions and mitigating their losses.
A mouthful but the moment you understand this concept, you begin to see trading in a different light, and the skirmishes between the bulls and the bears makes so much sense and choosing the right side would become a piece of cake.
