Almost worthless

As the title of the review states, this book is almost worthless, for two reasons. First, even though it states in the introduction that it works out all of the even-numbered problems in the textbook, in actuality it works out the *odd* numbered problems, the same ones for which short answers are already given in the textbook. Second, the book is full of errors and typos.

There is a little help to be had in the worked out problems (if there is no error or typo), but this is most definitely not worth the $33 purchase price. Better to study hard, ask the professor if there is anything you don't understand, and save your money for a more worthwhile book.

Social commentary and metaphor

Like all Forster's novels, the plot of 'The Longest Journey' is secondary to the underlying themes - the new 'mechanical' society that Forster hated, being true to yourself and class structure. It's not the kind of book you pick up in an airport - it's thought provoking and wonderfully written.

The Best Loved though Not The Best

Edward Morgan Forster expressed his special partiality for this particular book regretting that it was never as popular as "The Room with a View". It seems, however, that his readers knew better choosing either the lighter Italian novels or later works such as "Howards End" or "A Passage to India".
Forster's partiality is comprehensible when we try to read the book through his biography. On the one hand he is able to reveal here his long-term infatuation with a fellow student and go back to his university adventures. On the other hand he uses his craft to draw for himself a life he would have had he decided to become straight. The image is far from pleasant - becoming straight means being imprisoned in a hapless marriage for which the hero has to pay with his academic career. It is an unhappy life which ends in an accidental death.
This is an important novel in Forster's oeuvre and if you were attracted by others you should by all means proceed to "The Longest Journey". Still, a modern reader will gasp many a time while reading the novel. It wouldn't be fair to reveal too much but just let me draw your attention to one fact. Forster apparently finds dealing with his cast of characters a bit too much so they disappear one by one... as a result of sudden deaths. When Gerald is "broken" on a football pitch you gasp, but when you have drowning, heart attack, deathly cold and train accident and so on you can't help smiling.

Sometimes stuffy, but great characters and social commentary

The Longest Journey can be difficult to get into, but is worth the effort. Set at the end of the Victorian period in England, it follows the character of Rickie Elliot from his Cambridge days through various attempts to find happiness and fulfillment in life. It helps to know a little about British society to fully understand each character's actions. The fascinating thing about the novel is that there isn't a single character that you can pinpoint as good or bad -- like real people, the characters lie and put on false fronts. It's fun to discover just who Rickie's friends and relatives really are. Characters like Agnes, who Rickie loves, and Mrs. Failing, his relative, make some great points about women in society. Although this book is primarily a "novel of manners" like Jane Austen would write, there are several exciting plot twists, including a surprise ending. If you enjoy books by authors like Jane Austen and Thomas Hardy, try The Longest Journey.

About the Author
Ron Pevny is the founder and director of the Center for Conscious Eldering. He received his masters degree in Integral Counseling and Psychotherapy from the California Institute of Integral Studies. Important Principles for Getting the Most Out of Life

As this demographic bulge of boomers enters the third age, we are faced with a choice – in fact a number of choices. We can accept the " sentence" of age and decay, with all the associated degenerative illnesses, and try to make the best of our twilight years. Alternatively, we can revel in the opportunities for personal expansion and contribution to the community that come with the release from the confines of the workplace.

It would be a great pity to waste the fruits of all the wisdom we have acquired in over half a century of living, but more often than not, that is the case. In traditional societies this wisdom is highly prized and honored, but in the youth culture of the West it is too often ignored and wasted. If, as elders, we acquiesce in this and go quietly into our retirement homes and vegetate, we will be missing out on what could be one of the most exciting and fulfilling periods of our lives.

To take full advantage of these years we need to be healthy and have a positive attitude. But as the author points out, conscious aging goes a step further. Conscious aging has a spiritual dimension in which the individual connects deeply to a sense of purpose and connection. He or she is inspired to find ways to give back to the community that will nurture their spirits and enrich all those around them. That is the difference between being an elder and simply getting old. Which do you choose?

A gem of a book for the journey into a richer, more satisfying elderhood

Ron Pevny’s book Conscious Living, Conscious Aging is a gem of a book that I would recommend to every self-reflective person at or beyond mid-life. It will entice you on a journey of inner growth that makes the elder years richer and more satisfying and vital than most people can imagine. It could change the paradigm of aging and how elders can reclaim their traditional social roles as wise stewards and mentors. Ron brings to the book the wisdom of his great experience, both personal and from leading “Choosing Conscious Elderhood” retreats and other nature-based programs (full disclosure: I participated in one recently). Each chapter takes up one of the issues we need to confront and work through to be conscious elders––for example, healing and releasing the past through reframing our stories , healing relationships, forgiving ourselves and others, and letting go of outworn identities; facing our mortality; building legacy, and balancing serving and savoring. Each chapter ends with an illustrative “story by the fire”; one of the most compelling for me was “From Grief to Gratitude in the Death Lodge,” about a mother’s healing from her daughter’s suicide several years previously. Resources and exercises are appended. The writing is elegant and lucid, and yet at the same time it’s as though you are having a conversation with Ron around a campfire. I’m gifting this book to friends for the holidays.

Ron Pevny identifies "the Neutral Zone" as that time between "severing" with one's previous life and "reincorporating" into a world in which aging has meaning and purpose. The Neutral Zone is, I think, where so many of us find ourselves…waiting for a sign for what to do next after retirement. Pevny gives this period its own kind of positive meaning, AND he gives lots of suggestions and good advice for how to think about what's next. The book is personable, easy to read, interesting and, best of all, promising. Completing life is not a failure, it's the crowning.

Inheriting his Aunt Becky's home in Texas is a God-Send for down-on-his-luck Californian Jake Maxfield. Reeling from the crashing mortgage scene and trying to rebuild a relationship with his teenage kids, the last thing Jake was looking for was love. And not just any love...love with a man.

That man is Cade Littlebear.

Cade, also not looking for love, realizes the attraction he has to Jake. Both single men are raising teenagers and know the difficulties merging families can be especially when you add in the hatred for homosexual relationships where they reside. After deliberation not to hide their budding romance, the men deal with hostility and anger.

Logan writes an amazing story of love, companionship and human kinship that made me want more. The determination and perseverance Jake and Cade displayed was heart-warming and realistic. The way Logan built the tension (both through the love Jake and Cade shared and the bigotry from the residents) was traumatic and down-to-earth believable. The passion, obvious racism and life dilemmas are so descriptive, well- dialogued and beautifully written. While it may appear the men fall in love quickly, in real life, this does happen. We just don't admit to it whereas Logan showed how easily it can happen.

Recently windowed, left with two teenagers to raise and flat broke, Jake Maxfield needed a miracle. That miracle came from his elderly aunt who passed away and left him her house in Texas. Packing up his family, Jake moved from Los Angeles to Westburg, Texas to start a new life. The last thing Jake expected as he was trying to put his family back together was to fall in love. No, actually the last thing he expected was to fall in love with a man.

Cade Littlebear, a single dad raising a teenage daughter was well known in the community. For the most part he kept his private life very private but when Jake arrives in town neither man could hide their instant attraction to each other.

Jake soon learns falling in love with Cade and coming out to his family may be the easy part of this new found relationship. Trying to stay alive when they become the victim of bigoted hatred may not be so easy.

What a story! Leather Nights was such an `I can't put this book down' story. Cade and Jake were endearing and strong characters. They were each other's ying and yang. They drew strength and gave strength to each other as needed. Leather Nights wasn't just a love story and it didn't focus totally on Jake and Cade. There was mystery, action, heavy emotions and a loving family unit that pulled this whole story together. There were very well developed supporting characters and some sick and twisted villains that just held me captivated until the very last page.

There was so much I enjoyed about this book, but it was not a perfect story. I have to admit I was taken aback by how quickly Jake fell for Cade. It seemed a bit quick with where he was coming from emotionally and with Cade being a man. But once they did fall in love it was solid. It had to be with all the obstacles that were trying to break them apart. Readers looking for a fully developed story that incorporates more than the main lovers and have characters that continue to grow and develop as the story progress will enjoy Leather Nights.

What a touching and heartwarming story

I loved every word of this book. The characters were well developed and the attraction between them was approached with sincerety and warmth - from Jake's confusion over his attraction to cade and his worry of how his children would perceive him after the already traumatic time they had been through - to the way Cade felt so deeply for the other man that he was willing to take things at Jake's pace and not push for anything more than to just be beside each other.
But the sex...when it began....good grief! It was hot, descriptive but at the same time warm and emotive and you could feel the depth of the love between these two men who discovered new things about each other that they hadn't even realised.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and it's a must have addition to any M/M reader's bookshelf.

The part of the History of Philosophy of which the present volume treats I attempted to present in an extended work, the first division of which appeared thirty-three years ago, and was separated from the last division by a space of twenty years. I may be permitted to say something respecting the relation in which the present, probably my last published work, stands to that earlier, which was my first. That it is a very different one, part by part, every one will readily understand, who considers that the first division of the larger work was written when its author had reached his fourth climacteric year, the last division, when he had reached the seventh, and that now, when he is approaching the ninth, he must naturally find the first to be more remote and foreign than the last.

a good introduction to the topic

This book is well written and researched. It has numerous photos and lovely illustrations. I learned an amusing term for housecats - "exploiting captive". My only complaint is that the book was too short.

Excellent book, should not be going out of print

This is a great book on an often ignored topic. It is well-written, scientific, and has beautiful illustrations. I highly recommend this as an introduction to the topic. I am fascinated by anthrozoology, and as far as I see it, this text is another "must have" in the anthrozoological library. The domestication of animals has changed the human race in so many ways. We humans have to attempt to step outside our species to truly understand ourselves. This book is well worth the price. I do have a question for the author though, it's been 10 years now, where is the new edition? Don't hold back on us Juliet Clutton-Brock.
