Author Deke Castleman has been in the gambling media business for more than 15 years and the travel-publishing business for 25. He's written numerous editions of Las Vegas and Nevada travel guides and, as senior editor at Las Vegas-based Huntington Press, he's edited upwards of 40 books on gambling and co-written more than 150 issues of Las Vegas' most respected gambling newsletter, the Las Vegas Advisor. I love gambling and think that I was born with the gambling gene. This book attracted me at first because I wanted to get the chance to see what it was like to be a "whale" (the biggest gamblers with the largest bankrolls) and work with a whale.

Steve Cyr is known to be the best casino host in Las Vegas. In this book you will get the chance to see what the life of a revered casino host is like and that nothing is off-limits to a Vegas "Whale". You will also understand what a cut-throat type of business casino hosting is.

Shocking and eye opening in some spots--this book is a fast and fun read. If gambling is not in your blood, it may not be as enjoyable a book as you might like.

Wondered what it was like to be a high roller?

If you want to read about Las Vegas's highest of high rollers, "whales," and what a casino will do to keep them happy, then this book won't fail to satisfy. Along the way you'll meet Steve Cyr, a young Turk casino host. A host is the casino's employee whose job it is to look after the big players and to keep them happy and, more importantly, keep them coming back and gambling more and more.

Much of the book is built around Cyr and his style (his style can be both inspiring and annoying). Cyr is about 70% time-share/condo salesperson and 35% cruise director and 10% Kato Kaelin (yeah, he's 115%). But the book is more than Cyr and his successful effort to modernize the way casinos market to high rollers. You'll meet some of the whales themselves. You'll find out about the mini-palaces casinos have built just for them. And one subject usually kept off the record is covered: do casinos provide sex to their top players?

The book is not a superficial People Magazine of famous celebs who frequent Vegas. It's about both sides of the table, the whales and the casinos and hosts who harpoon them. The dark side of gambling is offered up as gamblers spin downward out of control, losing millions. There are plenty of details and that's what really distinguishes this book. Other books have touched on the fantasy of the high roller's life. Such as Lifestyles of a High Roller, Anderson's Burning the Tables, Rubin's Comp City and a couple specials on the Travel Channel, but nothing has offered up the depth or detail of Whale Hunt.

John Allan Wyeth was born in Alabama, and served as a private in the Confederate cavalry until his capture two weeks after Chickamauga. After the war he became a surgeon. He died in 1922.

The Civil War you're looking for...

I've read the dry memoirs of a few Civil war heroes. Grant, Sherman, Sheridan. They're fine. But if you want the real guts'n'drive factor of this war, this doctor's story of Forrest is what you're after. As another reviewer has mentioned, when you get into other major characters you actually find less good action, more weakness, time-wasting. Forrest has his flaws, but more along the lines of all of ours. Hold a grudge if you like, but give the story its due. This has it all, in spades.
The doc is a passionate storyteller but doesn't prejudice the tale. He's written to a fine line.
The other major biographer, Steel, is known as the fairest (and the most recent and "professional"), but with him we get excessive DRYNESS. Who needs that. Moreover, Steel bends over backwards to discredit the hero Forrest, giving more than equal time to every potshot against him. This is called fairness. The shots never hit their mark even with Steel, yet he gives them their due and their due dilutes, taints and distracts the story. ---Even more so than Forrest's own flaws do! (Touche'.)
Wyeth is a clean historian yet lets the story's vigor come through just right. The adventures of Forrest will keep you riveted from start to finish. There's no other way to put it.
Forrest's covering of Hood's (?) final retreat was, in that day, declared to be the inevitable future subject of EPIC poems. We haven't seen any such thing, sadly. But that's the scale of this story. It would still be worth the effort, I think. A movie anyone?
Of course, every angle is worth savoring---including the old partisan Lytle's "Critter Company" bio.

Plain facts yield thrilling tale

This is one of the first Civil War books I've read. It's hard to imagine I'll ever find a more thrilling one! Forrest is a hero beyond compare. It's amazing how Wyeth's dry, barebones delivery so clearly lets one read the amazing human spirit between the lines. These bare facts alone tell a tale more thrilling than any I've come across to date. Of course, sometimes our good doctor tips his hand with feeling and fervor about honor and good work, but he never seems biased, nor overloading our hero with praise. He relies heavily on clippings of official reports from both sides. I would say the Northern leadership appreciated him more than the Southern leaders. The "unlettered soldier" sure seems to have been screwed over by the old boy's network many times in response to his victories and saves. There's frustration, but also a sufficiency of comeuppance and a steady faith in virtue as its own reward. Forrest's occasion for nearly throttling Bragg was unforgettable: "If you ever again try to interfere with me or cross my path it will be at the peril of your life." Forrest was big, strong, scary and his men loved him. He raised multiple armies from nothing and equiped them by way of victory, only to have them taken away, re-officered and such. He was quick to temper and just as quick to apologize if need be. God's own democrat, as they say. A rare general who fought at the front every time. Killed 30 himself. An early innovator in guerilla war. Used flying batteries at the front. Used rumor and deception. He did much of his own reconnaisance behind the lines. When charged, he never took a charge but charged back, saying he believed a charging man was worth 3 standing. His famous saying "get there the firstest with the mostest" seems to be typed differently here. Likely his grammar cleaned up? It never says he was illiterate, but was he close to this? Anyway, I'd never heard of him until now. Perhaps being a Northerner had something to do with it? My loss, until now. Despite being shafted often, it seems like he was able to always keep his 'escort' of about 80 plus a few brigades thru most of the story as he builds and loses armies to his rivals. I sense more great drama involving those who stayed loyal to him throughout. If ever split from him awhile they seem to come back to him like a magnet. I'm hoping to find that side covered by Lytle's 'Critter Company.'

A female teenagers perspective

I am 16 years old and my parents bought me this book hoping it would be of use to me. "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" is a book I would recommend to anyone, not just people who tend to worry a lot. I mostly have all good things to say with the exception of one. After completing the first half of the book, the second half sounds similar to the first. I got everything out of it that I wanted to and felt as if the rest was just extra things that did not mean much to me. Overall, the book teaches a new way of looking at things. Along with an abundant amount of ways to make your life less filled with worry, Dale Carnegie shows you how to get the most out of living. I have actually made a list of all the points touched on of things I can do each day to bring less worry and stress to my life. I hung this list on the back of my door to see each morning. I found this book helpful and it really changed my outlook on things.

How to Stop Worrying and Start Living convinced a skeptical analytical guy like myself who dismissed almost everything not proven via scientific method to realize the ultimate purpose of life for a human being isn't to understand it, but to live it.
If I could convince every one in the world to read just one book, this would be it. Worry/anxiety/fear pulls down our capability to fully love what we do, to fully love others, and ultimately to fully love life itself. Had Dale Carnegie lived long enough, I'm sure he would've concurred with Yoda when he said: "Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering". So let's allay our fears so we can stop suffering and live a life of joy.

A masterful and highly original achievement

This is one of the most insightful books I've ever read, and it was instrumental in planning my master's thesis. I cannot possibly recommend this book, or any of Mr. Bercovitch's books, highly enough. It is also rare to read a work on this subject matter that does not have obvious political bias or an agenda.

Thorough, not complete.

After only 29 pages I found myself constantly asking "what is that, and when did the author define it?". Additionally, there are enough oddly worded sentences that I am unable to follow what is being said. Perhaps I am not the intended audience for the book, but since Sulkin did not include a forward, I can't tell. I am trying to use this as an initial guide to PBX, and find it lacking enought that I am now looking for another book.

Good overview of the world of voice communications

This book is a bit outdated since it is from the last decade but it met most of my objectives since I wanted to learn more about the fundamentals of voice communications including: PSTN, ISDN, PBXs, etc.

This is not a introductory book for novices.

I felt that this book was not proofread enough, i.e. the editors were not thorough enough as I did find quite a few errors: duplicate sentences, typos, o instead of 0, etc.
