Practical, infomative advice for beginning bladesmiths

Worth more than $50

I was hesitant on ordering this book, I've read or bought almost everything I can find relating to bladesmithing or blacksmithing. I got the book, and read it from front to back, then read it again. This book not only offers insight on how to make needed equipment, but also explains how to make knives of both stock removal, forging and wire damascus. I've never read a book on this subject where it felt like the author was talking directly to me, explaining things that I was thinking. This book is definitely one for the beginner smith.

Great book

I got this book last night and have read it cover to cover. Wayne gives great confidence to the beginner. Just the simple fact that you don't have to go broke to make knives is very fullfilling. Some great shop tips and good ways of looking at shop problems.
Buy this book and David Boye's book, and you are well on your way.

The term functional foods was fi rst introduced in Japan in the middle of the 1980s for the processed foods containing ingredients with some specifi c bioactivity and health benefi ts in addition to being nutritious. But the concept is originating from Hippocrates: We are what we eat - and it is really true. Nowadays, the importance of producing foods and food components with benefi cial physiological effects over and above the basic nutrients is increasing. Nutrition science and food biochemistry has moved from the original goal of avoiding nutrient defi ciencies or antinutritives to the concept of positive and optimal nutrition. Researchers are focusing on the identifi cation of bioactive molecules in foods, which have preventive effect and decrease the risk of different diseases or help maintaining the optimal physical and mental health. Many foods contain bioactive components, which typically occur in small quantities, like vitamins, polyphenols, or carotenoids, and play important roles in prevention and health promotion. This book, by combining scientifi c access with practical usefulness, contains a wide range of information on the effect of bioactive compounds and their presence in different foods. Functional Foods, Nutraceuticals and Natural Products focuses on these food components, which have bioactive effect in the human body. The gas turbine has proven to be more revolutionary

Jet engines seem simple in concept and modern in practice. Like other technologies they have been readily accomodated into our lifestyle. Constant effectively demonstrates the turbojet was not the inevitable result of prior systems but rather the culmination of a process of technological change, which required the "prior successful co-evolution of piston aero-engines and streamlined airframes."(241). The turbine, from which the turbojet evoloved, has a long history going back centuries from water turbines, to turbine pumps, steam turbines, turbo-air compressors, internal combustion gas turbines and the turbo supercharger.

This process, according to Constant, can be represented by, what he terms, a "presumptive anomaly." In his model an individual or a group of individuals assume that a conventional technology will sooner or later fail and eventually be superceded by a superior system. Usually the insight and determination for this change comes from outside the established community and is the result of a vision of the future, not the dream of the past.

The four men responsible for the turbojet are Frank Wittle in England and Hans von Ohain, Herbert Wagner, and Helmut Schelp in Germany. None of them were a part of an established engine manufacturing company, but all were aware of advancing aerodynamic technology. Each independently deduced the new performance parameters required for the turbojet. Constant cautions that, while their work was revolutionary, they worked within the norms of a Western technological culture. In other words they had to prove that their technology was in fact superior and practical. In Constant's model a "new normal technology" in aeronautics was established in 1939 when England and Germany firmly committed to develop the turbojet engine.

A tradition for technological testing was also essential in the evolution of turbine power. Constant emphasizes its importance as "clearly critical, for without it, idealized scientific theory, however correct, could have only limited impact on the design of real world systems."(56 ) The ability to measure the efficiency of turbines permitted the advancement of the most efficient designs and, in the case of the turbojet, a means to measure its effectiveness against the prevailing piston technology.

At the time of his writing, Constant's focus on turbojet power (with the revolutionary SST and Concord in mind) seems to hold up well enough, but subsequent developments weaken his argument. The turbojet has not become the new normal technology. By shear numbers and the diversity of applications, the internal combustion gas turbine has arguably proven to be more revolutionary. Compared to the raw thrust of a turbojet engine, in a turbine engine most of the power is extracted from the gas flow as shaft output prior to it being exhausted out the tail pipe. This energy is then used to power not only aircraft, but also ships and tanks. Even experimental turbine powered automobiles were tested on American highways in the early 1960s. The distinction may be at first glance appear to be slight, but turbojet engines have had only a limited application in high performance military aircraft. The gas turbine is more widely used and more fuel efficient for general applications.

Constant does a credible job of tracing the development of turbines through the turbojet. While his "presumptive anomaly" model may have applications to particular historical analyses similar to turbine development, it is too specifically focused to be of general use.

It should be read alongside Vincenti's account ('What engineers know and how they know it') of lesser and purely evolutionary developments in engineering. Constant demonstrates how revolutionary change demands the application of science by individuals of outstanding mind, insight and persistence -a stark contrast to evolutionary development, reducible to a corporate process,as described by Vincenti.

About the Author
Lorenzo Sciavicco is currently Professor of Robotics in the Department of Computer Engineering and Automation of the Third University of Rome. His research interests include automatic control theory and applications, manipulator inverse kinematics techniques, redundant manipulator control, force/motion control of manipulators, and cooperative robot manipulation. He has published more than 80 journal and conference papers, and 1 book. He has been one of the pioneers of robot control research in Italy, and has been awarded numerous research grants for his robotics group. He has served as a referee for industrial and academic research projects on robotics and automation in Italy. Bruno Siciliano is currently Associate Professor of Robotics in the Department of Computer and Systems Engineering�and Director of the PRISMA Lab at�the University of Naples. His research interests include manipulator inverse kinematics techniques, redundant manipulator control, modeling and control of flexible arms, force/motion control of manipulators, and cooperative robot manipulation. He has published more than 150 journal and conference papers, and�7 books and is the Seires Editor of Springer Tracts in Advanced Robotics. He has delivered more than 60 invited seminars and presentations at international institutions. He has served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation from 1991 to 1994, and as an Associate Technical Editor of the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement, and Control since 1994. He is also on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Robotica and the Journal of Robotic Systems. Since 1996 he has been an Administrative Committee Member of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (re-elected in 1999 and again in 2005) and served as either Vice president for Publications or for Technical Activities between 1999 and 2004, and Chair of the Technical Committee on Manufacturing and Automation Robotic Control of the IEEE Control Systems Society. Awesome. I couldn't find some of the information I needed from my other a&p book, marieb 9e, and this one had everything I needed. I like the graphics in this book & find them to be very helpful. I couldn't figure out what phagocytes were involved in the innate immunity & this book has a graphic that organized everything so I wasn't just assuming. I also like the histology graphics, there's an animated photo & an actual photo pictomicrograph for most tissues. I ordered this book after we did the cardiac chapter, but I think the graphics are far better than in the marieb book. I was struggling to try and match the mechanical & electrical cardiac events & this book shows it in a graphic, which would have been very helpful. Wish I would have ordered this book in the beginning of the semester. I first came across this book on their website (it's available for free as a pdf) & I kept printing off pages. I figured I'd rather just buy the book than have a bunch of loose pages all over the place. I looked on amazon to see if it was available in a printed edition & it was. Thanks to this book I passed my a&p 1 final with a B. I've attached pictures of some of the graphics I found to be very useful.

Lorenzo Candelaria (Bachelor of Music, Oberlin College, 1995; Ph.D., Yale University, 2001) is an award-winning teacher and author at The University of Texas at El Paso. He is the recipient of prestigious fellowships from the Fulbright Program and the National Endowment for the Humanities and was presented with the Robert M. Stevenson Award by the American Musicological Society for his book THE ROSARY CANTORAL (2008).

Probably the best college text for a "survey" of American Music

In the past, there was Hitchcock, Chase, and Hamm's books. They were all "surveys" in that they started with Native American music and the music of the early settlers and progressed roughly to the present. These are outdated books as far as the "present" goes, but they are each still very good, even if what they emphasize is different. Today, though, the college teacher has two options, Richard Crawford's "Introduction to America's Music" and this book, originally by Kingman and substantially revised by L. Candelaria. Crawford's "Introduction" is really excellent in every way. It is packed full of information with all points-of-view and arguments thoroughly influenced by the most recent research. He really knows his stuff. It's organized chronologically, so, like the books above, it starts with the settlers and moves forward. My students had trouble with this book, as did I, because it takes a full third of the semester before you get to any music that most of the students have even heard of. That's why Kingman/Candelaria is, in my opinion, a uniquely successful alternative. It starts with the four historically principal categories of "folk" music (N-A, Mexican American, Anglo America, and African American) and includes another chapter on more recent kinds of folk music from other traditions. As for many students the "real" American music is "folk music," this is a great way to start off the semester and gets the class really thinking about the issues that shape the character and content of music in regions that now comprise the U.S. After that comes Blues and Rock (which I separate because I think rock needs to come AFTER all the other popular music), then big units on Sacred Music, Popular Music, and Classical Music.

At first I didn't like this approach. But after using it I realize that, if properly supplemented, it is the ticket to a successful class. Students need to know that American Music has been around for several centuries and that we can't shape our understanding of what it is by just current standards alone. So I find the book to be very balanced. Yes, the section on jazz could be larger. And I think there musical theater gets short shrift as well as American popular music from the 1920s to 1950s that isn't jazz (as in the many famous songs that reflected changing American values over those decades as well as served as standards for jazz bands).

So this needs to be supplemented. But its still the best approach for many reasons. One is that there isn't a huge amount of reading (which most students just won't do). The text that is there is, for the most part, accurate and includes very important interpretive information. I think most students feel "informed" after reading the chapter so that they can listen to music, whether it's the shape note singing of Appalachia or barrelhouse piano style or the songs of Tin Pan Alley with some solid knowledge about where these genres came from. Yes, there isn't a whole lot of historical information here. But what there is is judiciously chosen. A book on American Music of four centuries that would include all the historical background would probably have to be about 1600 pages at the minimum.

So I highly recommend this. Just be ready to add some supplemental music. For example, I used some wonderful recordings of 18th century American sacred music that has appeared in the last 15 years, particularly of the Moravian community or of Billings and the New England tunesmiths. Also, I thought there should be more popular music from the period just before and leading up to the Civil War. THere are tones of recordings out there now of this music that are available, some even using period brass instruments.

Best before 40

The writer has named the book 'Best After 40'. I think it makes it look like you should read it when you are already or way past 40. However, I am not 40, yet have enjoyed it a lot; and learned even more!
I am not entirely okay with the kind of shifting impressionist presentation; nonetheless, some parts of it are very sophisticated and remind me of antique poetry. Others are more like very detailed movie scripts, with some delicates face-to-face scenes. While reading it, I kept on thinking about Coelho's 'Alchemist' and that book by the title 'Eat, Pray, Love' by Elizabeth Gilbert. This one is very different though. The narrator in the book - I don't know anything about the writer's real bio - seems to come from an Eastern European background and this makes it an even more interesting read - it is as if Medea or Rachel from the Bible wrote a book today. I hope this one makes it big, though it would need a bigger publisher I guess. :-D
Oh, and I would have chosen a different colour for the cover (difficult to read on a bus without people watching a pink book in your hands you know); but the stone is a good pick. My kids and wife liked it too.
