Tactical training - shoot, move, and communicate

I read this book twice. First time, I had hoped to discover more about Central Asia and China. That content includes the sport of horsemen fighting over a goat body, which can be seen on YouTube as well. The second time, I tried to follow the story line which included many people on many parts of the earth, all wanting (pro) or fighting against (con) a war between China and the USA. Most episodes included brutal violence by men and women, thus the name of the book Brute Force. So much violence works against a world at peace.

All six books at once-what a ride!

Definitely a first, I read all six books back to back after reading the first of this series. Unable to put them down and barely able to breathe from the suspense many times, it will be good to relax waiting for Cameron's next novel. Not since Robert Ludlum and Vince Flynn have I been so completely captivated by the characters and plot of these stories. Anyone loving spies and espionage will love these novels. But don't think about getting much else done once you begin reading! I highly recommend reading these books in order since the sinister plot begins with the first and resolves in Brute Force.

BIG UNCLE thinks he us smarter and .ore powerful than the players I this spy war, but Ran and her daughter Song prove otherwise. Jericho is teamed up with Song but his girlfriend Garcia is being tortured in a secret Locatin. Can Jericho save the women from certain death? It isn't easy to say the least. A page turner. Also clean language a. BIG plus!

Wonderful Detail About The Effect of One Man's Evil

This amazing biography has been reviewed inside and out as well as brought to the screen. The detail and observations by the author about this remarkable and wholly dislikeable and disturbing man are beyond well-crafted. Few authors are able to hold the reader through the minutae of an entire lifetime, but Hoffman does exactly that. Roy Cohn's influence and power mark a dark period of American history, a period that is all too cavalierly thought of as an easier and simpler time. Cohn's trail of savage selfishness left many literal and figurative bodies in its wake, and the author has exposed his subject as the perpetrator of pure evil that he was. One of my favorite books of all time.

Here's a great book to take along on trips across the state. We find the information fascinating. We learn how places were named and how many times the name has changed, when the post office was established and (sometimes) closed. This is history in sound bites that supplement what you might already know, or give a tiny insight into an area you knew nothing about. Great to share with kids and adults alike.

This is the epitome local history reference. Mr. Romig performed a valuable service for all Michigan historians-not only is this a history of the state post offices, but Romig also gives a brief history of the founding of the town, as well as the primary founders. It is a wealth of information!

In this part of the story we delve deeper into beautiful Roger's past, and the tragedies that seem to follow him through no fault of his own, as well as the result of Reno's confession. Nekota sensei's work is extraordinary and lovely and so romantic, with emotive developments ready to stab your heart with the feels. I love all of this author's creations, they are so gorgeous and exciting, and I wish more of them were available to purchase. This series should be read by any true yaoi fan.

Nice, not great.

Overall, I give the book four stars. Here's a brief summary of its contents, with each story/essay independently rated. From * "I did not like it at all" to ***** "I loved it". I was expecting something like Kiln People.

The Giving Plague: A scientist tries to avoid catching a plague in which discovery he took part. ***

Myth Number 21: A super short story. To say more would spoil it. *

Dr. Pak's Preschool: Early stimulation on babies is taken to the extreme. ****

Detritus Affected: Some archaeologists in the near future make grim discoveries at a site. ***

Hot and Cold

David Brin is certainly a talented author, but there are far too many preachy spots in this book for my taste. That he is a disciple of Richard Dawkins was evident from a line in "The Giving Plague" taken directly from the title of Dawkins' book, "The Selfish Gene". He makes it obvious by the final essay.

He also appears to like the surprise twist at the end of the story as several of these short stories have them. The end of "Dr. Pak's Preschool" seemed to me to be a bit contrived, as did the end of the (much better) "The Warm Space", but "Piecework" was such a fabulous, delightful story that I read it several times over even before I went on to finish the book. "NatuLife" was also a fabulous story with many layers of meaning and significance. A fascinating premise that first appears in "Ambiguity" takes a decidedly preachy turn in "What Continues...and What Fails...", a story that crystalizes the author's (and Dawkins') views on evolution.

When it comes to the essays, "The Dogma of Otherness" is both clever and interesting. Brin's sense of humor comes through quite well. Starting with "Whose Millenium" the essays get preachy though, and the mask came off in the final one which was both predictable and boring for anyone who has taken part in internet debates on evolution or religion.

I own this book, having picked it up when the local library discarded it to make room for others. Most of the stories are definitely worth reading, but it isn't likely to find a permanent spot on my shelves either.

Good, provocative and unexpected

I've tried to read David Brin books before and found them either too subtle for me, or just plain boring. Though, I have read the blurbs on many of his books, and always thought he had some surprising ideas -- as if he'd been practicing those lateral-thinking puzzles for years. I was quite surprised to find a great collection of very provocative ideas that kept me interested all the way through. From a Japanese culture where the ultimate work-ethic means babies are tutored within the womb and are hooked up to computers at their birth, to "organic humans" discovering themselves useful again after years of uselessness in a culture and society of ultimate "cryo-mechanical humans": I was impressed. He even touches on theories of the existence of the entire universe(s) in a highly entertaining way. My recommendation is forget his longer (and long-winded) novels and devour his short-fiction. The ideas/stories in this collection are crystalised and involving. This one may actually cause me to look more closely at his other novels...

I would say the music difficulty is around early intermediate, overall. I didn't know this when I ordered it, but there are actually 16 songs, so it's very like playing on the piano what you might listen to on a soundtrack of the background music. I fell in love with the main theme song from Howl's Moving Castle, so I really like this. Thank you!

For the true "Howl's Moving Castle" junkie

I bought this for my daughter for Christmas, and she actually cried tears of joy!!! She was able to transpose a lot of it from piano to guitar, which thrilled her even more. Some of the pieces look a bit difficult (there's one that needs 2 people to play... FUN!) but generally speaking I'd say they're for the late beginner to intermediate player. They do sound just like the pieces in the movie!!

Another awesome use would be to copy the more difficult pieces and make beautiful paper roses for the music lover in your life. Pinterest or YouTube should have instructions :-)

Meh.

I saw the cover of this book in a book store and thought that it might be interesting. I liked the concepts but found the ending a tad disappointing. (Possible spoilers ahead) It kept my interest and I definitely finished in a few days. However, I was hoping to see the main character (Niles) come up with an awesome idea for his movie pitch. That's the main reason for the storyline is his struggle between a fictional world and the real one (which does not meet his standards). But in the end, I feel like the character just gave up. I would have liked to have seen his story fail or be a success. Not just have him decided to quit being himself and walk off into "the sunset" as it were. I felt the end was a let down and a cheat for the reader. Having read the synopsis' for his other books (based on pulp characters like Doc Savage/The Shadow/ Zorro), they sound much more interesting than this one turn out to be. So my final remark is, "Meh".

Modern fiction, rather good

I was interested by the subject matter, but loved the stories within the stories. There were a lot of modern references that may or may not stand the test of time but it was a good read. Its overall concept of fictional characters and being real are great. The resulting idea of realism was rather fascinating as well. As a sci fi enthusiast, it overlaps the ideas of clones and false realities. Once I got about half way through, I cranked it out! I do recommend this, if you like to contemplate your sense of self you will enjoy it as well.

A decent read for enjoyers of fantasy or science fiction

First Impression: I fell victim to another awesome book cover. Thankfully what was contained within was worthwhile reading, which is always a bonus. The Fictional Man is a story of identity, neurosis and pop culture. I enjoyed my time within these wall and I related to the main character quite a bit as I am also an introvert who wishes he was more assertive!

Summary Of The Book:

Niles Golan is an author, he was a half decent one but now he is sliding away from the public view after sending out one embarrassing novel after another. Golan's main novel series is about Kurt Powers, an ex lawyer turned non-nonsense private investigator. After 17 novels under his belt Golan wants to revitalise his character on the big screen and in real life. Golan lives in a world where cloning technology exists and it is quite an established and almost common practice. Society rejects the idea of cloning real-life people as it would lead to problems and most likely increase crime rates. They do however believe that it would be acceptable to use this cloning ability to bring to life fictional characters. Golan wants to invigorate his career and his life by bringing Kurt Powers to real life to be his best friend and his meal ticket.

As Golan has let himself and his career slide he isn't able to just create Kurt Powers by himself, he needs a studio to fund the project and eventually his first movie. After approaching a studio he is offered a project, not the one he wants but he is led to believe that this may be the first step on the journey to a freshly made Kurt Powers. The project is to re-imagine his favourite childhood movie 'The Delicious Mr Doll', a cheesy parody of James Bond with the smuttiness and silliness turned up to 11. Armed with his incredibly introvert personality and his fictional friend Bob, Golan must get to the root of this movies origin and write a box office smash so he can get what he really wants.

Set in a world where pop culture literally walks the streets and the line between reality and fiction is blurred to the max, The Fictional Man is a fun, neurotic and odd novel that will make you question if you really want to meet some of your heroes or just leave them within the pages of your favourite book.

My Review:

The Fictional Man is a book that pulls a lot of separate concepts that appear across literature and pop culture and amalgamates them into an amusing, semi-complex story of a man's undoing. The author takes cloning, espionage, sex, internal monologues and fiction and splices them together, I enjoyed this book and not just because I am a dork just like Niles Golan...

First the positives...The story was original. I found the concept of an author chasing the origin of a story that has been so stretched, mangled and warped that you can't believe how the end result came about vastly enjoyable. Also the undoing of the introvert, uptight, dorkish and unpleasant Niles Golan was probably the best part of this book. The author set up this unbearable and frustrating character and then picked him apart slowly over the course of this episode and left him almost reborn. Niles is a funny character, he's a part of all of us at some point in our lives. He is the bad choices we make, the silly decisions and the internal voice we all wish we had the courage to fulfil (well myself at least). The other cast members all have their place and they add plenty to this story, Bob the fictional best friend who tries to settle the argument that 'Fictionals' are real people. The ex-wife who tests Golan every step of the way and makes him question himself. The various and absurd characters that make the reader smile or think WTF i.e his douche bag agent or the woman who pretends to be fictional. This book made me laugh!

Dislikes...there was not much I didn't like in this piece, it is not perfect by any means but I didn't find myself frustrated, bored or unchallenged. There were a few themes and parts that I did not find interesting, the whole no sex between Fictionals and real people was a bit phoney. The concept of cloning fictional characters is questionable but it was core element of the book so i embraced it. I found it hard to care about Niles to begin with, but once his character started to break apart I found myself rooting for him. This book is cheesy, disturbing and weird, but it is also charming and everyone can relate somehow.

The main themes included are identity, cloning, culture and humanity. The author conveyed these themes well and I think the only weak theme was the cloning, but cloning is always abused in books and television as it is a versatile and shady practice. The authors development was superb, I genuinely saw Golan change and peel of his undesirable characteristics and leave him as a blank slate, taking life one day at a time.

Overall The Fictional Man is a decent and highly readable piece of fiction that all fantasy or science fiction readers at least will appreciate. This novel is grimy, warped and a lot of fun!

As a professional, its always humbling to be reminded just how easy investing is. And make no mistake, it is easy- the industry's just so eagerly trying to sell it as something difficult. Mr. Mallouks book is a great and entertaining read, and a no-nonsense approach to investing.
