We are so blessed to have His Holiness Pope Francis with us at his time of trial. He understands God's Mercy SO WELL. The greater the need the stronger Mercy becomes, In the Spiritual world Mercy wins, although in the Secular world Justice wins. "God's Mercy is His Justice". Thank you Lord for inspiring Cardinal Walter Kasper to write the wonderful book MERCY.

I have by grace received personally experienced God's Mercy; it was grace that completely turned my life around from "the kingdom of self to the Kingdom of God." Oh' the Joy that filled my soul when at the lowest point of my life Jesus forever changed my direction. He came into my aching heart as soon I could receive Him and I experienced His unconditional love, I am free today because I belong to Him.

Please a personal word to Pope Francis if I might be so bold Isaiah 43 :25--26 might together help discern a new alternative penitential rite for those most in need of God's Mercy and specific help by a loving confessor after first being forgiven and belonging in the family of God, along with your merciful understanding of the prodigal sons father as so well declared in this book. We like the subject matter and the homilies from Pope Francis

My bible study group is using this as a Lenten study for the Year of Mercy. We like the subject matter and the homilies from Pope Francis, but we have found the questions to be very deep and somewhat repetitive. Our evening sessions take about 30 minutes longer than usual this season. It would be harder to use by yourself, since the challenging questions need input from others to help us all understand.

Good Introduction, Useless Audio

After buying and working through most of what is available, I recommend this book as an introductory book on Serbian. It is just an introduction, though, and you could memorize the entire book without even reaching the intermediate level of proficiency. I say this, sadly, after having studied book after book and, though I have given lectures in Serbian, I failed to reach even a modest level of conversational proficiency.

Complete Serbian presents more vocabulary than most introductions and does a fair job of introducing the grammar without actually making a formal presentation of the rules. This method has the obvious defect that the material is presented without rhyme or reason, whereas in a traditional grammatical presentation an older student begins to grasp general rules that he can apply to a variety of situations. The authors assume their readers are illiterate idiots, and they could save a lot of space and time by teaching a little grammar. Still, it is a decent book and easier to use than the far more explicit and complete Introduction by Thomas Magner--which should be used in conjunction both to build vocabulary and learn the structure of the language. Still, Complete Serbian is well worth having and studying.

The audio files, by contrast, are virtually worthless. The speakers read without intonation or affect and at breakneck speed. I have spent a great deal of time in Serbia and no one talks this way, no one. The male speakers are particularly hopeless. It is as if they are in a race to get to the end before anyone can catch them, and along the way they are inarticulate to the point of being mush-mouthed. I wonder about their educational level. When I meet educated Serbs, I can take dictation from what they say, even if I do not understand them.

Like many Serbian men, the male speakers fail to make the tonic accents distinguishable. This is not a question of the rise and fall of the voice in other languages: rising and falling tones have a lexical and grammatical significance, and if one cannot hear them, mistakes can be made especially by novice speakers. (Montenegrins, by the way, have a proverbial tin ear, both as speakers and as singers, even though they have produced two of the finest poets in the language--Njegos and Matija Beckovic.) The women in these tapes are better and more articulate, but they often read like zombies.

There really is no good audio course for Serbian. The massive collections made by the FLS are hilariously unlistenable, far worse than the dialogues accompanying this text., and delivered in a harsh monotone that defies comprehension. Croatian is much better served by audio courses, but unless you are a fairly advanced student, you should not use Croatian audio if your desire is to learn Belgrade Serbian. Of course, they are the same language, but you would not listen to Lowland Scots if you were planning to spend time in London.

This book was good to start, but then randomly, it starts writing in cyrillic...without really teaching you how to read cyrillic. If I knew how, I would rate this book 5 stars.

Good book, but highly OVERPRICED

This book introduces the fundamental concepts of Size Exclusion Chromatography with emphasis in the practical aspects, without going into many details, or mathematics, but gives the necessary information. It is very readable and it is not intended to the specialist in SEC, but for people who use it, especially in polymer analysis.
On the downside, it is very, very, very overpriced.

Not Abnetts best, but still Abnetts

Dan Abnett, Black Librarys best resource, returns to writing AStartes fiction after a long stint with Gaunts Ghosts, to give us Brothers of the Snake. Rahter than a single storyline, this is more a collection of short stories that orbit around a central character, Brother, and later Brother-Sergeant Priad, as he encounters Orks, Dark Eldar, and daemons of Chaos.

The character development in this is rather bland. Unless you're good at remembering names, you can almost shuffle them aronud without losing any of the plot or message. A few characters stand out, especially when squad Damocles takes some new initiates into its ranks. There are some good points and some nice turns of phrase, but this really pales when compared to his work on the Horus Heresy and the Ghosts. This is not to say that the work is not good, which it most certainly is, but when an author consistently sets the bar so high for the readers, anything less than perfection seems like a let down.

All told, the novel is well written and technically appealing, as it gives insight into some of the labrinthyan rituals that make of a Chapter of the Astartes, and also help to illustrate how a brotherhood of about 100 soldiers does still manage to police and protect a large region of space.

I can understand why some people didn't like this book...it doesn't follow a traditional story line, and some people won't buy into that. But, if you actually play the game upon which the setting of this story is based, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Unlike any other story based on the Warhammer 40k universe, this book actually FEELS like the game in its presentation. In the miniature game, you don't really follow one trooper in a linear story from game to game. No way, you pick him up at the end of the battle, put him in a box, and then he gets plopped down in the middle of an entirely different scenario the next time you play.

This book really gives you that sense of surprisingly pleasant disconnect that happens on the table top. And just like the game, there are going to be some toy soldiers you care about more than others - for whatever silly reason - soldiers that you're always eager to see how they're going to perform from game to game. Abnett has brilliantly captured that feeling, that sense of dropping in on a Space Marine at various points of his personal history; and yet he still manages to tie every moment together into a single overarching narrative that is always waiting for you in the wings.

I highly recommend this book to people that play the game...because frankly, unless you do, I'm not sure you're going to "get it." And because Abnett necessarily has to leave out some readers with this style, I can't give him five stars. That doesn't mean, however, that he still isn't the most compelling writer on a very short list of consistent Black Library authors.

About the Author

Adedeji B. Badiru, PhD, is dean of the Graduate School of Engineering and Management at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). He previously was professor and head of Systems Engineering and Management at the AFIT, professor and department head of Industrial & Information Engineering at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and professor of Industrial Engineering and dean of University College at the University of Oklahoma, Norman. He is a registered professional engineer (PE), a certified project management professional (PMP), a fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, and a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering.

Major Christina F. Rusnock, PhD, is an assistant professor of Systems Engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), a faculty research fellow for AFIT’s Graduate School of Engineering and Management, and program chair of the Systems Engineering Distance Learning Program. She is a member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and the Association of Military Industrial Engineers. She earned her BA in economics-government from Claremont McKenna College, an MS in research and development management from AFIT, and an MS and a PhD in industrial engineering from the University of Central Florida.

Major Vhance V. Valencia, PhD, is an assistant professor of Systems Engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). He currently is a faculty research fellow for AFIT’s Graduate School of Engineering and Management, director of the Graduate Engineering Management program, a registered professional engineer (PE), and a member of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME). He earned his BS in mechanical engineering from San Diego State University and then pursued his graduate studies at AFIT, earning his MS in engineering management and PhD in systems engineering.
