Review
"The text is generously complemented by tables and charts containing a wealth of statistical information, reproductions of policy statements, and other important documents. It will be of value to anyone looking at the development of public library services in the international context. Of particular usefulness is the clearly up-to-date bibliography of over 100 pages." --The Australian Library Journal, November 2011

"Effectively balancing between information and knowledge, practice and research, and common history and hidden history, Kathleen de la Pea McCook's new edition of her Introduction to Public Librarianship does an exemplary job of encapsulating the epic sweep of public librarianship in an engaging manner. Exploding with examples of current services, policies, and programs in public libraries around the country, many useful statistics, historical and contemporary anecdotes, sidebars about underrepresented groups, and a wealth of suggestions for further reading on every topic, this book tops the 500-page mark, yet nothing feels in excess. The book not only stands as an excellent introductory text to librarianship for new students, but it would make an excellent reference for current library professionals and should be required reading for any faculty members working with future public library professionals." --Library Quarterly

"… most chapters … have been extensively revised to reflect recent developments and current tools … Introduction to Public Librarianship is the most comprehensive one-volume text on this topic … one of the go-to texts for public librarianship." --Booklist

A Keeper
By LadyGrinningSoul
As a student librarian, you may not be surprised to read that I love books. I collect them; I have a pretty good collection so far. Among my collection are numerous school texts...but on these, I only keep the ones that I really like, that I cannot bear to part with.

Introduction to Public Librarianship is one of these books. I have enjoyed reading the history of public libraries in this country, and the writing is thought-provoking enough to have necessitated margins full of my notes. Also, with its compact size, this book is one I can read in a variety of situations--not just on my desk.

The Irish Rebellion of 1641 and the Wars of the Three Kingdoms (Royal Historical Society Studies in History New Series), by Eamon Darcy

After an evening spent drinking with Irish conspirators, an inebriated Owen Connelly confessed to the main colonial administrators in Ireland that a plot was afoot to root out and destroy Ireland's English and Protestant population. Within days English colonists in Ireland believed that a widespread massacre of Protestant settlers was taking place. Desperate for aid, they began to canvass their colleagues in England for help, claiming that they were surrounded by an evil popish menace bent on destroying their community. Soon sworn statements, later called the 1641 depositions, confirmed their fears (despite little by way of eye-witness testimony). In later years, Protestant commentators could point to the 1641 rebellion as proof of Catholic barbarity and perfidy. However, as the author demonstrates, despite some of the outrageous claims made in the depositions, the myth of 1641 became more important than the reality. The aim of this book is to investigate how the rebellion broke out and whether there was a meaning in the violence which ensued. It also seeks to understand how the English administration in Ireland portrayed these events to the wider world, and to examine whether and how far their claims were justified. Did they deliberately construct a narrative of death and destruction that belied what really happened? An obvious, if overlooked, context is that of the Atlantic world; and particular questions asked are whether the English colonists drew upon similar cultural frameworks to describe atrocities in the Americas; how this shaped the portrayal of the 1641 rebellion in contemporary pamphlets; and the effect that this had on the wider Wars of the Three Kingdoms between England, Ireland and Scotland. EAMON DARCY is an Irish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow working at Maynooth University, Republic of Ireland.

A foreign correspondent is targeted by the US government after aligning with the Communist Party for a controversial story
In what many consider his most autobiographical novel, bestselling author Howard Fast revisits the McCarthy-era anticommunist witch hunts he endured during his years as a member of the Communist Party. In The Pledge, Bruce Bacon, a war correspondent stationed in Bengal near the end of World War II, investigates a terrible famine that has left millions in India starving to death, despite ample food supplies stored—and allegedly withheld—by the British. Seeking to tell his story back in New York, Bacon meets members of a communist organization, including a Daily Worker reporter named Molly Maguire. But the America he returns to is not the same one he left behind, and soon Bacon discovers that associating with communists has put him squarely in the crosshairs of the House Un-American Activities Committee. This suspenseful and powerful novel revisits the guilt-by-association fear and suspicion that gripped America during the second Red Scare, which had harrowing consequences for those unfortunate enough to be accused. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Howard Fast including rare photos from the author’s estate.

From Publishers Weekly
Fast, whose many bestselling novels have made him an American institution, writes here of a situation with personal overtones. A left-wing activist during his youth, Fast denounced the Communist Party in the 1940s, but rather than testify before the witch-hunting HUAC, he served a jail term during the '50s. The protagonist of this novel is foreign correspondent Bruce Bacon. After covering WW II in Europe, he goes to India where he witnesses a horrible famine in Bengaldue, he is told by everyone, including the Communist journalist who shows him the horrors firsthandto the British, who would rather see millions of Indians die than allow them to greet the Japanese as liberators. Back in the States, Bacon takes a leave of absence from the New York Trib to write a book about his experiences. Asked to speak to a group later identified as a Communist-front organization, he meets feisty, articulate Molly Maguire, a writer for the Daily Worker , and falls in love with her. Nothing in Bruce's politically innocent, upper-middle-class WASP background has prepared him for Molly's "shanty Irish" world, or for the ordeal that awaits him as he is caught in the mounting anti-red hysteria. Called before the HUAC, he is cited for contempt; he loses his job; his book is refused by publishers; eventually he is sentenced to jail. And a further tragic irony awaits. Fast's narrative sense has never been stronger, the dialogue has verve and creditability, and red-haired Molly is one of his most memorable creations. Deftly, avoiding stridency, he captures the McCarthy-era atmosphere of suspicion and betrayal. More than compelling fiction, this engrossing novel carries a message of what can happen when democracy is subverted by demogogues.

About the Author
Howard Fast (1914–2003) was one of the most prolific American writers of the twentieth century. He was a bestselling author of more than eighty works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and screenplays. The son of immigrants, Fast grew up in New York City and published his first novel upon finishing high school in 1933. During his incarceration, Fast wrote one of his best-known novels, Spartacus (1951). Throughout his long career, Fast matched his commitment to championing social justice in his writing with a deft, lively storytelling style.

By Mary E. Sibley
Bruce Bacon, journalist, arrives in Calcutta near the end of World War II. Bruce's father is a physician. The family did not suffer during the depression. Bacon is working on an investigation for the New York Tribune as to why stored rice was not distributed by the British to the populace during a famine.

An Indian journalist claims that the vast discrepancy between the rich and the poor is part of the colonial system. Summoned by U.S. Army Intelligence, Bruce is informed his questioning of the British High Command has been inappropriate. Subsequently his Indian informants are arrested and orders are cut for him to leave Calcutta, (he is a civilian).

Three weeks after Bacon leaves Delhi the atom bomb is dropped and the war ends. The Tribune won't publish his investigative piece, telling him it is too long. Bruce asks for and receives a six months leave to write a book.

Later the FBI tries to interview Bruce Bacon and he learns from a friend that he is on a list. Events impede progress on his book, notwithstanding the fact that he is a professional writer and has learned to produce work under dreadful circumstances.

A friend who is a Communist tells him the party would shrink his soul and destroy him. Bruce Bacon receives a subpoena to appear before the HUAC. The rest of the story is for the reader to discover. There is much excitement.

Group think remains a possibility in today's world. We would be incredibly naive if we felt that the Cold War era and that time of fears has nothing to teach us.

TRUE?

Hard to review a book you haven't read yet, but I am doing just that. I am currently reading Fast's bio-book, "Being Red," which is about his involvement in the Communist party, and as a journalist in WWII.

From what I have read in "Being Red," this novel is a tale of what happened to him in WWII in India. The story of the starvation of about 6,000,000 people in India, by the British, by manipulating the rice market, is true.

And that is the reason I am buying this book today, and reading it ASAP.

Excellent blend of Social Media and Business
By A. Reader
You can buy a book on social media, or you can buy a book on business. Rare is the opportunity when you can find a book that successfully merges the two into a practical, easy-to-understand book that one can begin using immediately.

David Kelly has written such a book. Not only does he supply great tips about using many of the major social media outlets, but he applies sound business strategies to demonstrate the reasons why each may be a tool to consider using. He believes social media is the great equalizer as any business, small or large, can achieve its goals and then some if it successfully employs the marketing channels that are available. This is not a “Do this and you will be rich” book; rather, it is a training on how you can use social media to successfully brand yourself or your product. It concentrates on how to get more eyes on whatever you are selling.

I found most important his chapter on measuring your success. You can be the best at promoting yourself with social media, but if you aren’t tracking your efforts and results (basic taking care of business), there’s no way you can know how you are doing. Kelly talks about different analytical tools specific to each site that will help to make your job easier and aid you in determining what works and if your efforts are properly placed.

All in all, an excellent book to have on the shelf for anyone who is looking to increase their market share in today’s world.

I use Facebook on a daily basis but only for personal stuff. So its just now that I am learning the many other things it has to offer, mostly after reading this book. There is a small paragraph on the 4 types of paid posts on Facebook...I am disappointed to say that that tiny paragraph felt like a simple intro to the subject rather than a detailed explanation which is what most people would look for. I think maybe a longer section should be dedicated to things like these in social media that not all people are aware of.

'In addition to such central figures as Brentano, Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, and Gadamer, this book also contains clear introductions to, and useful excerpts from Reinach, Scheler, Stein, de Beauvoir, Arendt, Derrida, and Ricoeur. This is an excellent collection of writings on phenomenology
By N. Coppedge
This is an excellent collection of writings on phenomenology. It includes some of the most significant works of Heidegger (such as a piece that mentions the imago of a blossoming tree) as well as some major works by female writers. This text also includes significant biographies on all of the included writers.

One particular writing in this work is by Paul Ricoeur, who is one of the most recent phenomenologists and phenomenological critics. He introduces some of the radical foundations for coherent theories of objective knowledge that later gel in the works of Nathan Coppedge. I am Nathan Coppedge, and I found Ricoeur's work influential, even though my own work is self-published.

Good Introduction
By M. Brown
Moran and Mooney's "The Phenomenology Reader" is a great primer for the subject, if you can have a primer in it. They have a wonderful introduction that gives the writings that follow a historical place and then offer brief introductions to each of the writers and writings as they come. It's not the easiest introduction to phenomenology, but I'm not sure that one exists. It's not an easy topic.

Note: this book is quite a tome, if you're looking for a pocket sized intro, check out the "Very Short Introduction" series by Oxford

Consciousness-raising...
By FrKurt Messick
It is somewhat ironic that Phenomenology, as a term or as a philosophical school, has yet to really reach the popular consciousness, given that phenomenology is in many respects a study of consciousness and how reality impacts consciousness. Phenomenology in the most formal sense of being a school of philosophy is largely traced to Franz Brentano (1838-1917) and Edmund Husserl (1859-1938). Husserl's great work at the turn of the last century, Logical Investigations, set the stage for the development of phenomenology as a way of seeing, a descriptive study with roots in empiricism going back to inspiration from Aristotelian ideas. This is a key word - description. Rather than being a set of constructs and principles typical of previous philosophical systems, Phenomenology attempts to describe reality fully as reality is presented to our senses.

Phenomenology is different from scientific study in that it does not pretend toward a universal truth or experience unmediated through our subjectivity (a principle modern science seems to be incorporating more and more). Editor Dermot Moran has a solid introduction to the subject, including distinctions of different kinds of study, some of the personalities involved in the development of phenomenology, and the current state of the discipline.

The list of names of those involved in phenomenology as a discipline or as a method reads like a who's who of twentieth century intellectuals - Derrida, Ricoeur, Arendt, Heidegger, Sartre, Levinas, and others. Each of these, in addition to Husserl and Brentano, have articles and extracts included in this volume, along with some other thinkers as well. The collection here shows the breadth of the influence of phenomenology on the intellectual development of the past hundred years, as well as take the reader through a sequenced development of phenomenology using representative primary texts, provided here in an accessible, English-language edition.

This book can be used as a collection of readings in connection with Dermot Moran's text, Introduction to Phenomenology (also by the Routledge Press, 2000). It can also be used as a stand-alone survey of phenomenology with success, particularly if the reader takes advantage of the lists of further readings at the end of each section.

Phenomenology is a fascinating subject, and the method of learning the subject from the original sources, the primary texts of the foundational thinkers, is second to none.

An Honorable Lonely Lord to Love
By Kathie @First Page to the Last Book Reviews
I have loved each and every Lonely Lord that Ms. Burrowes has written for us. Darius used to be my favorite. But now he's been taken down one little notch and David has stolen my heart.

David has a blue eye and a green one. He's a viscount and a physician by training. But he doesn't practice anymore after a very sad turn of events. He owns a brothel and he needs someone to run it, a madam, in fact. The women at the establishment are making him crazy.

His man of business, Jennings, asks him to look in on Letty Banks. She was the mistress of Douglas, Viscount Amery's brother. Things are not looking well for the courtesan and David's protective instincts rise to the occasion. It doesn't hurt that Ms. Banks is a tempting, shy young woman. Somehow the shyness and title "courtesan" intrigue him. He must get to know her better, and since she needs income, why not let her run the brothel?

Why not, indeed.

Once again, this lonely lord is damaged, just a bit. And Letty, too. This is a theme that is reoccurring in Ms. Burrowes books. But aren't we all just a tad bit damaged? What makes this work is seeing how they tend to each other. How they help each other heal. And there I go again, falling in love with this gorgeous, sensitive man with the beautiful eyes.

There is a scene so full of angst that I just had tears streaming down my face. Only way I can read that sort of thing is that I know that Ms. Burrowes is going to make things right with her characters. And she does. David put his analytical mind to work, with some pushing from Lord Valentine (I love him, too!) and he figured things out. Thank goodness!

Several of the Lords and their Ladies from the earlier books make their appearance here. It's always so nice to see them again.

I have a small heartache, the author's notes at the end state that this is the last Lonely Lords book! I did mention to her that it hurts to hear such a thing. But Ms. Burrowes assures me that there will be more of her tortured heroes to come. Maybe even Daniel and Mr. Jennings! Something to look forward to, for sure.

So, once again I've fallen in love with a Lonely Lord.
Maybe you will, too.

Fairly's Book Was Only Fair
By Judge Tabor
I was disappointed in this book on so many levels. David Fairly's character has always been an intriguing character for me in the other Burrowes' books. Part of my interest had to do with the fact that he is a peer, physician, seemingly marvelous friend and all around nice guy and then those remarkable eyes - one blue and one green.

What I liked: I was pleased that this book didn't revolve around the activities of the brothel that he inherited even though the heroine, Letticia (Letty) Banks, is ultimately hired to be the madame at the brothel. Letty, whose past is revealed over the course of the book, was formerly mostly known as the mistress of David's deceased brother-in-law, Herbert. When David realizes that Letty is in dire straits, he tries to figure out a way that would assist Letty financially - thus, he offers her the job as madame of the brothel he inherited.

Letty is so desperate for money, she agrees to take the job even though she knows very little about the business. As we eventually learn about how and why she came to be in the position she found herself in, it is difficult to appreciate many of David's maneuvers as they relate to Letty. In point of fact, Lord Valentine Windham, Lord Douglas Amery and even Westhaven himself all caution David about his plans/treatment/maneuvering of Letty. David, however, wants her as his mistress and finds a way to make it happen even though technically, she isn't available to him except as a "lover" and only at the place and time of her choosing.

One common issue I have with many of Ms. Burrowes' books is that she gives us these intriguing Main Guys but their past is super sketchy. Why did David leave home and travel all those years at sea? Why did he not realize his two young stepsisters needed him to provide for them? How does he manage to have properties on three continents and when the book mentions the awful, terrible, things he has seen and done, what would these things be? I am left with way too many questions about the how and why of some of these characters in her books and especially in the case of David.

*Spoilers* Also, when David Fairly is mentioned in some of the previous books, one gets the opinion that he is a very sweet, kind fellow and yet his sensitivity when it came to Letty was just lacking. He kept her in the same house that she had mistressed in for "Herbert" and she couldn't bear to even be in the room where she and Herbert had been together. What??? Then, even after David was over the moon for her and asked her to marry him and she took a knife for him, that is the house he fixed up for her to live in??? Also, a couple of instances when she is asleep, he uses sexual accoutrements from the brothel on her even though she is somewhat "gun shy" due to her past experiences. And, in one of those occasions, she didn't appear to enjoy the experience. That just doesn't sound like the "fair" Fairly.

Last - I hate these books when the H/h, though both professing to be head over heels in love, just give up on one another without any explanation of "why" or demanding the reasons "why" from the one who won't say "why" and this garbage typically goes on until the very end of the book. Ugh!!

Last Comment: The unexpected bright spot in this book was Daniel, Letty's brother. I agree with another reviewer that it would be great if Daniel could have his own book.

David...a masterful Lonely Lords addition!

The opening has us sympathizing with David over his having inherited an elegant, expensive brothel. As we are told this should be every young gentleman's unbridled fantasy. David Worthington, fourth Viscount Fairly, bemoans the fact. Owning a brothel brings a myriad of problems.
David's interest in Mrs Letticia Banks is due to her having been the mistress of his deceased brother-in-law, Lord Amery.
David needs a Madame, Letticia needs employment. Certainly this looks like a way forward for both of them.
Of course, nothing is that simple. As David and Letty are thrown together the attraction between them surfaces. And of course Letty's road to her current state has a sympathetic back story.
Oh and yes, 'feet' feature once more in this masterful Lonely Lords addition. As David and Letty embark on a fuller relationship David reflects, 'he'd touched her feet before, and it seemed a safe--and biblically humble--place to start.' I love the imagery of this line.
Douglas Allen, the Viscount of Amery becomes one of my hero's in his discussion about women with David. No wonder he and David are friends. Two compassionate men, yet both so very different. I have enjoyed them both right from the first moment of meeting them.
His confidences to David about Letty reveal the thoughtful depths of the man. Douglas, adorable man, shocks David by suggesting that rather than bed Letty, he David, should marry her. Well that rather takes David aback!
I loved it when Douglas describes David as 'an odd duck...a saint by some standards, a lunatic by others.' This is such an apt comment about David.
Once more David's medical know come to the fore in relation to Douglas's wife Rose, her pregnancy and the impending birth. We learn more about David's previous life and marriage.
What a wonderful person he is and Letty matches him.
The emotions, the sensitivity of David, the sympatico of Letty make for some singularly sweet love scenes, that hum with the very essence of tender love, desire, understanding and appreciation.
So why does Letticia want to leave him? Therein is the mystery! A mystery right to the end.
I do so love this family, all are as mismatched and charismatic as David's eyes, and I love that they rally in support of each other and stand shoulder to shoulder!

Introduction to Criminology: A Text/Reader (SAGE Text/Reader Series in Criminology and Criminal Justice), by Anthony Walsh, Craig T. Hemme

A unique text/reader that takes a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to the study of criminology

Providing an affordable alternative to the standard textbook, this new edition of the authors' popular text/reader provides instructors and students the best of both worlds – authored text with carefully selected accompanying readings. Now thoroughly updated with new articles, new content, and new statistics, tables, and figures, this Second Edition provides an interdisciplinary perspective on crime and criminality that incorporates the latest theories, concepts, and research from sociology, psychology, genetics, evolutionary biology, and the neurosciences. The new edition is divided into 15 sections that mirror chapters in a typical criminology textbook.

New to This Edition:

  • A new Section 11 on Mass Murder and Terrorism makes coverage of these high-interest topics even more accessible. Section 10 now focuses only on murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, and domestic violence, making it easier for students to absorb the material.
  • New articles appear in the structural theories section, the sections devoted to violent crime, and throughout the text/reader as needed.
  • The authors now more closely link sections on types of crime to sections on theory to give readers a more cohesive understanding of the connections between the two.
  • Contemporary criminologists' favored theories (drawn from a survey of 770 criminologists) now appear in a table to give readers insight into the professional opinion today on criminological theories.

Features:

  • Each Section has a 15-page introduction (a "mini-chapter") that contains vignettes, photos, tables and graphs, end-of-chapter questions, and Web exercises, followed by three to four supporting readings.
  • Theory Section introductions contain a unique table that compares and contrasts the theories presented, while theory concluding sub-sections focus on policy and crime prevention.
  • A "How to Read a Research Article" guide (which appears prior to the first reading) illustrates key aspects of a research article.
  • The book's readings are drawn from carefully selected, edited journal articles appropriate for an undergraduate audience.

Good Book
By ILoveShoes
I bought this book, as it was required for my Intro to Criminology course. Although I was technically supposed to order to edition that was published after this one, I bought this one, because the price was so much cheaper and I figured the newer edition and this one couldn't be too far off and I was right! Exactly the same book, although some of the chapters are ordered differently compared to the new edition, but that wasn't a problem at all. Great book and very informative!

Works
By M. Forstrom
This still works and saves you a good amount of money. With a university library, you can find the few readings that are in the third edition but not this one, and the other differences are minimal (for instance, this one doesn't have the info that the FBI changed their definition of rape in 2012 from "the carnal knowledge of a woman" to something that doesn't exclude men).

Thank you!
By A. TALLEY
Wasn't expecting book to be spanking new for the price it was listed, but it came in the original clear packaging and everything. Came faster than expected. Very happy with this book purchase. Thank you.
