Most helpful book on the topic of Sexual Lust I have seen!
By R. N. Alsop
Jim Vander Spek has written a great volume on the subject of sexual lust. First, I appreciate that he admits he did not go fully into the sin of lust. He never had a sexual relationship with a woman besides his wife. He heard a message by Billy Graham and it affected the way he allowed himself to indulge in sexual lust. He started to believe that "if, given the opportunity, one would have sex with one he was looking, it was then sinful lust" (Page 28). So this gave him permission to look at whatever as long as he did not actually have sex with that person.
Throughout this resource, the author points out truths that are not commonly taught. "Until lust no longer dominates you, your heart, soul, mind, and strength cannot be properly centered on loving God" (Page 73). He makes it clear that we cannot tolerate this (or any sin) in our lives. He lists many "rationales" men often use to excuse a certain level of dabbling in lust by way of the "illicit sexual buzz". He describes these rationales like this, "something that allows us to live with ourselves and to sleep at night. Most importantly, maintaining a rationale allows us to keep on doing those things that we know are wrong" (Page 63).
Also an important distinction between this resource (along with Every Man's Battle) and others addressing the issue of lust is the clear message of victory. Other books don't set a clear goal of victory over lust but rather give you techniques to manage the issue. The secular as well as many Christian counselors have taken the attitude of the "recovery movement" and look at sexual immorality as an issue of addiction where there is no room for victory but only a lifelong struggle to stay "sexually sober" (Page 109-111).
This author does an admirable job of drawing the distinction of true victory over sin even lust. "Christian abdication to the world's vision of endless struggle without real victory is pernicious since it misrepresents the nature of our new life in Christ. Liberation begins with an understanding that no sin can stand before the power that is at work in us and that the hold of any indwelling, life-dominating, and habitual sin can be broken" (Page 107).
The book is presented in two parts: Part 1 - Battling Lust and Part 2 - Learning from the Scripture. I have not even gotten to the second part of the book and I feel like this resource is the best I've seen about the issue of sexual immorality in the individual believer. In referring to Matthew 5: 27-30, "resorting to physical amputation as a means of eliminating lust is the result of a grotesque misunderstanding of the vital point Jesus was making. Instead of condoning physical self-mutilation, this teaching forces us to recognize that it is not merely observable actions of the flesh, such as masturbation, that Jesus is calling on us to eliminate. Rather, he confronts the lust that is taking place inside... Since blind, handless men are equally capable of generating lust, amputation simply won't work" (Page 134).
"The particular cup (i.e. TV, internet, magazines, etc) from which we drink our lust is not the issue. It is the lust itself that must be eliminated" (Page 136).
The author makes a strong case throughout the book that there are many teachers that are leading many astray because of a faulty understanding of lust and how to gain victory over it. "Teaching about lust which does not provide clear biblical direction spreads a smothering cloak over those who are struggling" (Page 139).

Crucial clarity and practical, life-changing truth.
By Pastor Jeff Jackson
In "Overcoming Lust", Jim Vander Spek has been incredibly transparent about his own struggles with pornography and sexual sin and how God has given him decisive victory. As a pastor for more than 25 years, I've walked alongside and ministered to dozens of men that have been enslaved by pornography and various forms of sexual sin. And yes, I have read many of the Christian books that have been written in an attempt to help men be set free from this amazingly destructive sin. "Overcoming Lust" may just be the most useful tool I've found thus far.

Jim's definition of "lust", it's distinction from "sexual desire" and the connection "sexual desire" has with a "holy" or "unholy" sexual "buzz", are insights that I haven't seen in the other publications I've read on the subject. When you add in his unique and thought-provoking perspective on Romans 7, very practical advice on using and memorizing scripture, and a fresh view of accountability with other men, before you even finishing reading, I believe you'll rejoice along with me at this latest expression of God's grace towards His people....especially men of God!

Tough Topic, But Must Be Addressed
By Mike Yorkey
How many guys would raise their hands if asked in public if they have a problem with ogling women or undressing them with their eyes? The answer is only a few brave souls. Yet as the co-author of "Every Man's Battle," this issue hits home for every guy. Jim Vander Spek has labored more than five years to give all men a valuable resource with "Overcoming Lust." His transparency is amazing and his advice is rock solid. If you've been looking for ways to combat those "sexual buzzes" that come your way--and sometimes that's nearly impossible to escape living in this sexualized culture, then get a copy of Jim's book today. You don't have to live another day in sexual bondage and you can experience God's grace in a wonderful way. This book is highly recommended.

Faceless Killers, by Henning Mankell

From the dean of Scandinavian noir, the first riveting installment in the internationally bestselling and universally acclaimed Kurt Wallander series, the basis for the PBS series staring Kenneth Branagh.

It was a senselessly violent crime: on a cold night in a remote Swedish farmhouse an elderly farmer is bludgeoned to death, and his wife is left to die with a noose around her neck. And as if this didn’t present enough problems for the Ystad police Inspector Kurt Wallander, the dying woman’s last word is foreign, leaving the police the one tangible clue they have–and in the process, the match that could inflame Sweden’s already smoldering anti-immigrant sentiments.

Unlike the situation with his ex-wife, his estranged daughter, or the beautiful but married young prosecuter who has peaked his interest, in this case, Wallander finds a problem he can handle. He quickly becomes obsessed with solving the crime before the already tense situation explodes, but soon comes to realize that it will require all his reserves of energy and dedication to solve.

Amazon.com Review
If you remember with pleasure those dark and gloomy Martin Beck mysteries by Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo, you'll be glad to plunge into the first of Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallender mysteries to appear in English. Wallender's personal life can occasionally seem more depressing than even a provincial Swedish detective should be asked to bear, but his investigative skills are strictly first rate. And Mankell's story of the brutal murder of an elderly farm couple uncovers an unusual aspect of life in modern Sweden--a streak of fear and prejudice against the many newcomers from Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe who have sought asylum there.

From Publishers Weekly
In his first appearance in English, Swedish bestselling author Mankell combines thriller-quality entertainment with a depiction of anti-foreigner prejudice in Sweden, painted here as a very chilly place indeed. Since his wife walked out on him, Kurt Wallender, a middle-aged cop in the small town of Lenarp, has drowned his sorrows in opera and far too much liquor. Such consolations can't help him absorb the scene at the Lovgren farm, where elderly Johannes Lovgren has been brutally beaten and stabbed to death and where his wife, Maria, is found barely alive with a noose around her neck. Rydberg, a police force old-timer, says the noose's unusual knot and the word foreigner, which Maria uttered before she died, are important. Wallender puts those clues on the back burner when he learns that Johannes, ostensibly a simple farmer, had a secret life involving wealth and connections unknown to his wife. However, a leak to the press complicates the investigation by arousing anti-immigrant feelings, some of which are expressed in anonymous threats. Mankell is clearly a skilled writer, and his portrait of Wallender (who periodically slides beneath respectability) is effective. But he provides essential information only at the last minute, which makes the solution feel more like an appendix than a conclusion. Also, American readers may find odd Mankell's bundling of his upright anti-racism message with broad notions of what constitutes acceptable social control.

From Library Journal
This brilliant U.S. debut is the first book in a Swedish mystery series. An elderly couple is murdered on an isolated farm after being tortured brutally. The woman's last word, "foreign," unleashes an onslaught of antirefugee sentiment that Police Inspector Kurt Wallender tries to quell. Then the cold-blooded murder of a Somali refugee entangles the inspector further as he tries to solve that related crime as well. Meanwhile, he sloshes through the detritus of his own dsyfunctional life, trying to reconnect with his wife, who's left him; his daughter, who refuses to see him; and his father, who is slipping toward senility. The author goes well beyond the narrow police procedural in creating a full-bodied Wallender and in casting light on the refugee problem in contemporary Swedish society. Wallender is reminiscent of Ruth Rendell's Inspector Wexford in his low-key, thoughtful performance.

Watched the TV series?
By Marily4EveraNurse
Henning Mankell wrote exquisite noir mysteries! I love his books. With words he can immerse us into Sweden's winter gloom, make us shiver and actually become as
depressed as the weather. Most of the Wallander series are set in gloom. Most of the time our detective is fighting his Demons. In Reading the story, words allow us direct admittance to his thoughts, words allow us to see how he deducts the important from the chaos. We understand how his thinking leads to developing a working hypothesis, a strategy.
Wallander 's great detection of the crime and deduction of what happened is there for us in the book. In a movie you follow the action. In a book you hear the thoughts behind the action. In this story a heinous crime is committed. How he gets from the scene of the crime to the solution is a series of twists, dead ends, and surprise. Wallander's private life is forever butting in But, our detective is extraordinary. He puts away the unnecessary. He focuses completely.

Dark, Suspenseful and Highly Relevant to Our Times
By Claude Forthomme
There are two basic reasons why this book deserves five stars and is indeed a masterpiece.

One, Kurt Wallander, the main character, an ordinary, middle-aged policeman in a small town in southern Sweden, soon becomes someone you feel you know. He is someone who goes through the same (often depressing) experiences so many of us go through in our lives, as a marriage grows stale, as a child turns into a rebellious teenager, as a parent slowly sinks into old age.

Two, this is a book with deep roots in Swedish society, and by extension, in the society of any advanced country that calls itself (like Sweden) a democracy, that believes it has humanitarian traditions. And it's a book that does not shy from raising deep, uncomfortable questions. In fact, Mankell (the author) has lived in Africa and brought his own views to his books and the character Kurt Wallander. As he explained on his website,
“Racism for me is a crime, and therefore it seemed natural that I wrote a crime novel. It was after that the idea of a policeman was born.”
The book is peppered with Mankell's personal opinions about racism and how refugees are viewed and ill-treated in refugee camps in Sweden.

And that's what makes the book important, highly relevant to our times - a must read, particularly now with the on-going migrant crisis in Europe.

Worth your time
By Lynn Pena
I've watched the Wallander series on PBS and wanted to try the books. This is the first I read and I was immediately drawn into Wallander's world. Plan to continue to read his mysteries. I find them well worth my time. The character of Wallander is interesting, believable and definitely flawed, which only makes him more appealing. Other characters are also interesting. Occasionally I found the story confusing but that may have been because everything takes place in Sweden and the Swedish place names can be difficult. But I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience with Wallander.

Best part of these Serials yet
By Mary Barger
WOW this part packs in a TON of stuff. Babies are born to Carly and Brady. Carly makes her bond with Brady even deeper when she finally bites him back. Sierra is rescued and actually finds her true mate in Ashton, Annie is seeing a little action now too with Ian, Taylor and Keith are happy.
Lily is still up in the air about what will happen with Victor, but she is more on his side now than the people she once called friends. I would like to do serious bodily injury to Victor, no joke. I'm hoping a major butt kicking is in store for him.
I honestly cannot wait for part 6!
Violet Vaughn has made me a lover of serials and reading in a nice hot bath while my family asks if I am okay because of the laughing, swearing and "OMG ARE YOU SERIOUS?" that they have heard through out the first 5 parts.

By Racycarr
I received this for an honest review. WOW, just keeps getting better and better. Reminder this is not a standalone, so please go either listen or read the previous books in the series. The one thing I love about audios is no it gives a totally different feel to the book. With each book in this series you are not only get an amazing story but Erin DeWard does such an amazing job. I am so impressed with her talent. She has so many different voices and you are so able to tell by the voice which character is speaking. It is freaking awesome.

Now for the story itself. I keep trying to figure out Lily’s attraction to Victor. He has such an unexplainable hold on her. One I just don’t understand. He is so able to manipulate her way of thinking in a strange way. She is so taking back by his charm and looks. She is so innocent and does not even realize how much danger she is really in.

Victor still has Sierra. Things seem so dark for Sierra. You can only hope that her clan can save her. Victor keeps her well guarded and things just don’t look up for her. Sierra needs some good in her life before she loses her mind.

Ashton which is Ian’s twin does not even know that he is getting ready to find his true mate. Sorry not going to tell you who it is you will have to read or listen to the book to find out. But Ashton has been through so much. He has seen and had to do things for his country, so he could really use some good in his life.

Carly is getting close to her due date. Her and Brady are getting closer. There are some new turn of advents that I find funny when it comes to Brady and Carly, but sorry once again you will have to read or listen to find out. Trust me you will get a huge laugh out of it.

Taylor and Kieth are getting closer. They are planning a rescue mission for Keith’s ex-girlfriend Sierra. You have to wonder what fears Taylor is having during this planning. Don’t worry you will like somethings that happen with Taylor and Keith in this book.

Donna is Donna..LOL Love her to death. You can always rely on Donna to tell everyone like it is. She is such a huge strength in the family.

Annie well she is starting to learn to live. You will like somethings that is happening to her as well in this book.

Ian is having a great time. He seems to be taking it well that Lily does to want him. I have to say I am wondering about Matt. Have not heard much about him.

Opto-Mechanical Systems Design, Fourth Edition, Two Volume Set, by Paul Yoder, Daniel Vukobratovich

Opto-Mechanical Systems Design, Fourth Edition is different in many ways from its three earlier editions: coauthor Daniel Vukobratovich has brought his broad expertise in materials, opto-mechanical design, analysis of optical instruments, large mirrors, and structures to bear throughout the book; Jan Nijenhuis has contributed a comprehensive new chapter on kinematics and applications of flexures; and several other experts in special aspects of opto-mechanics have contributed portions of other chapters. An expanded feature―a total of 110 worked-out design examples―has been added to several chapters to show how the theory, equations, and analytical methods can be applied by the reader. Finally, the extended text, new illustrations, new tables of data, and new references have warranted publication of this work in the form of two separate but closely entwined volumes.

The first volume, Design and Analysis of Opto-Mechanical Assemblies, addresses topics pertaining primarily to optics smaller than 50 cm aperture. It summarizes the opto-mechanical design process, considers pertinent environmental influences, lists and updates key parameters for materials, illustrates numerous ways for mounting individual and multiple lenses, shows typical ways to design and mount windows and similar components, details designs for many types of prisms and techniques for mounting them, suggests designs and mounting techniques for small mirrors, explains the benefits of kinematic design and uses of flexures, describes how to analyze various types of opto-mechanical interfaces, demonstrates how the strength of glass can be determined and how to estimate stress generated in optics, and explains how changing temperature affects opto-mechanical assemblies.

The second volume, Design and Analysis of Large Mirrors and Structures, concentrates on the design and mounting of significantly larger optics and their structures, including a new and important topic: detailed consideration of factors affecting large mirror performance. The book details how to design and fabricate very large single-substrate, segmented, and lightweight mirrors; describes mountings for large mirrors with their optical axes in vertical, horizontal, and variable orientations; indicates how metal and composite mirrors differ from ones made of glass; explains key design aspects of optical instrument structural design; and takes a look at an emerging technology―the evolution and applications of silicon and silicon carbide in mirrors and other types of components for optical applications.

Review

"This is a great starting point and reference tool for engineers coming into this field. …it gives a concise review of metal mirrors identifying the key design and manufacturing practices that have been developed across the industry through the past two decades. The extensive list of references provides original source data for further reading on any topic."
―Dr. Alan R. Hedges, II-VI Incorporated

"… [the previous edition] is my go-to reference for all things optomechanics, so I anticipate the new edition will get just as much use. … The large number of illustrations, real-world examples, material property data, and additional references make this an excellent resource for any practicing optomechanical engineer."
―Katie Schwertz, Edmund Optics

"… main strength of this book is very comprehensive coverage of the key optomechanical design concepts and analytical methods that can be applied directly in the design and development of simple to very complex optical system. The information is easy to understand and therefore easy to customize and apply to new optical systems or instruments being developed. It is rare to find such a wealth of knowledge about many related topics in a single book."
―Anees Ahmad, Raytheon Missile Systems & College of Optical Sciences, University of Arizona, Tucson, USA

"… an industry standard in the field of Opto-mechanical design for many years. A must for mechanical engineers involved in mounting and design of high acuity optical systems."
―John Pepi, L-3 Communications SSG

"… a great reference book which covers many interesting topics and technologies which are practical and applicable to high precision optical systems."
―Myung Cho, National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO)

"… probably the most comprehensive, detailed, and up-to-date text on opto-mechanics."
Professor Nathan Kopeika

Obsolete and irrelevant, a few useful sections
By Daniel T Brown
A more accurate title for the book would be: "Design examples from optical systems for US military and aerospace applications, approximately 1950 to 1990, well-illustrated." Given this more accurate title, the book will be of interest to a few specialists.

The core chapters of the book present examples of how various opto-mechanical design problems were solved in a variety of applications. Almost all the examples are taken from US military and aerospace designs, with a very few from industrial optics. The designs are well-illustrated with relevant drawings, with good reproduction. The book appears irrelevant to the design of modern industrial, commercial, and consumer optical systems.

The book is not prescriptive. For the various design challenges described there is little information about what approaches might be considered or what tradeoffs are relevant. The book is primarily a sequence of examples. Each chapter refers to other books and papers, but these references are not organized to be of use to further learning by the reader.

The core chapters of the book are:

Chapter 4: mounting individual lenses, 72 pages
Chapter 5: mounting multiple lenses, 72 pages
Chapter 6: mounting windows and filters, 30 pages
Chapter 7: designing and mounting prisms, 70 pages
Chapter 8: design and mounting small, nonmetallic mirrors, gratings, and pellicles, 48 pages
Chapters 9-13: large mirrors, 210 pages

Notice that the chapters on the design of large mirrors, primarily for astronomical and space-borne telescopes, are almost as long as the entire rest of the core chapters of the book on optical design.

The non-core chapters of the book discuss more general topics. These are for the most part astonishingly poorly written and edited. I am amazed that a well-regarded organization such as the SPIE and a well-regarded publisher such as Taylor and Francis would print a book containing text of this quality. As a randomly-selected example, consider chapter 2 (environmental influences), section 2.2.2 (pressure). The paragraphs, in sequence, have the topics:

1. Definition of pressure, including discussion of how the US customary unit of pressure measured in mm of mercury is derived.
2. Statement of the pressure range to consider for optical instrument design, primarily in the atmosphere, but also space and pressurized spaces.
3. Discussion of the atmosphere of the earth, approximate equation given for atmospheric pressure with distance units in US miles. Reference to graph of pressure vs. altitude (units in km), the range is for spacecraft design (to 10000 km). [Note: This mixing of units - even in a single paragraph - is common throughout the book. A discussion may use one set of units, a referenced equation a different set. Read the text very carefully before using any of the equations. Better yet, find a reliable book instead of this one.]
4. Statement of problems encountered due to incorrect sealing of optical systems, allowing contaminants to enter during altitude changes.
5. Statement of problems encountered due to pressures within optical systems caused by failure to vent during altitude changes.
6. Statement of problems encountered due to outgassing at low pressures
7. Statement of overpressure problems due to high-speed movement through air or water. Discussion of thermal problems resulting from this motion, mention of materials and coatings to reduce thermal stresses. [Note: This mixing of topics - even in a single paragraph - is very common. The writing frequently appears to be a first draft, before any organization or editing. Essential material on one topic will be buried in the middle of a paragraph on a completely different topic. Also notice the lack of prescriptive information - the text mentions coatings to reduce thermal problems, without any additional information.]
8. Additional statement about pressure differential causing optical alignment errors due to mechanical deformation. This appears to be a continuation of the previous paragraph about high-speed movement, because the preceding paragraphs insisted the the optics must be vented, which would eliminate pressure differentials.
9. Mention that atmospheric pressure changes can change the index of refraction of air, changing the optical properties. [Notice that this is a different issue, the previous paragraphs have discussed mechanical, rather than optical, issues. Also notice that no equation is given for the index of refraction of air as a function of pressure.]

As you can see, this one section discusses venting, pressure differences due to altitude, pressure differences due to speed, thermal problems due to speed, and optical problems due to pressure differences and due to index of refraction changes. Only a few statements are useful for design, these are statements about venting optics, and the equation regarding pressure differences due to altitude (with the altitude measured in miles!)

The core chapters themselves have their own oddities. For example, chapter 4 regarding mounting of individual lenses (one of the chapters I found useful) seems to be written assuming that the reader will obtain standard lenses, then grind the edges for mounting. Section 4.2 (considerations of centered optics) is mostly about how to mount optics in grinding equipment in order to obtain properly-aligned edges.

While I found some individual sections of the book to be interesting and useful, all in all, I found the book to be a waste of money. The diagrams are very good, and make the text easy to understand. However, the vast majority of the text is useless. It is interesting to read about examples of some optical systems, but this does not help to design optics. The concentration on US military and aerospace optics of the mid-to-late 20th century is potentially of historical interest, but hardly of practical use. The lack of design information, poor organization, and unfocused writing, all make the book hard to use as a reference. The very poor presentation of equations and rather random collection of units in those equations make me distrust the little design information that is present.

Great book. As a Mechanical Engineer myself
By Kindle Customer
Great book. As a Mechanical Engineer myself, I used it in a lot of my designs, and they turned out to be very accurate after manufacturing. I used it primarily as a reference for most of the engineering problems that I might have.

I am surprised by the grammatical errors that this book has. I have seen several instances now of misspelled words, or sentences that weren't quite right and I am only halfway through the book. As a required book for one of my college senior classes, I expected it to be proofread more thoroughly.

Easy to skim through
By Jasmine Angulo
The book itself is repetitive and boring but its written in a way that you can read each headline and pull something together based on it because somehow what you think you're going to read about is what you actually read about. The book just stretches out the chapters unnecessarily.

Amazon.com Review
Written for those with some background in software engineering, Automated Software Testing: Introduction, Management, and Performance delivers a rigorous guide to the state of the art in managing automated testing in a text that will benefit anyone who tests software for a living.

First and foremost, Automated Software Testing presents a methodology for test managers called Automated Testing Lifecycle Management (ATLM). This soup-to-nuts tour of testing takes you from initial planning, budgeting, and staffing to building a test plan and choosing test tools to executing tests and even improving your testing process the next time around. Though somewhat thickly written--with plenty of software engineering terminology--this book can also be useful to more practically minded readers because of its many sample test documents. (Besides numerous lists and charts outlining the steps in the ATLM process, the book presents a sample test plan, budget estimates, and staffing guides.)

A truly standout feature is the book's survey of currently available automated tools that can be used throughout the testing cycle, as well as how to choose the right ones for your next project. For many software testers and managers, this section alone is probably worth the price of the book.

As this book points out, test engineering is a growth field. While schools and businesses work hard to meet the demand for qualified testing professionals, this title can provide a solid guide to the best thinking on automated testing solutions that will save time and money as well as improve software quality. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Theory and practice of automated software testing, the Automated Testing Lifecycle Management (ATLM) process, test analysis, planning, design and execution, white-box and black-box testing, metrics, and choosing testing tools.

From the Inside Flap
Preface
Automated Software Testing addresses the challenge for today’s software professionals who are faced with real schedule deadlines and need to introduce, manage, and perform automated testing on a project. The book addresses automated testing within a client-server or Web environment.

The focus of this book is the pragmatic concerns and information needed by the software test engineer/manager who faces the necessity of performing testing more thoroughly and quickly. By the same token, these same concerns may apply to the software developer who has the responsibility for development testing (that is, unit and integration testing) and, on some projects, system testing. The book also represents an informative guide that bolsters the ability of the quality assurance engineer to perform quality reviews on test design, test procedures, and the results of test activities.

The software project manager, who is responsible for the overall development effort, may also find this book useful. The text provides the project manager with guidelines concerning the goals and objectives of the testing effort and the decision about whether to automate testing. It also offers guidance on introducing automated testing on a project and outlines the processes for performing test planning, design, development, execution, and evaluation.

The authors have worked intimately with a number of automated testing professionals around the world, who were generous enough to share their problems and concerns. One primary concern voiced by these test engineers related to the fact that the test industry does not have the kind of structured methodologies that developers have traditionally enjoyed. Similarly, project managers, test managers, and test engineers may not be familiar with the kinds of approaches that are required to perform automated testing as opposed to the traditional test approach.

Clearly, the emphasis on automated testing represents a paradigm change for the software industry. This change does not simply involve the application of tools and the performance of test automation. Rather, it is pervasive across the entire test life cycle and the system development life cycle. The approach taken by project managers, test managers, software engineers, and test engineers is altered as a result. For software professionals to successfully make the leap to automated testing, structured approaches to testing must be embraced.

Automated Software Testing is revolutionary in that it promulgates a new structured, building-block approach to the entire test life cycle, while also providing relevant test automation and associated test management guidance needed by industry test professionals.

Automated Testing
Software project managers and software developers building today’s applications face the challenge of doing so within an ever-shrinking schedule and with minimal resources. As part of their attempt to do more with less, organizations want to test software adequately, but as quickly and thoroughly as possible. To accomplish this goal, organizations are turning to automated testing.

Faced with this reality and realizing that many tests cannot be executed manually, such as simulating 1,000 virtual users for volume testing, software professionals are introducing automated testing to their projects. While needing to introduce automated testing, software professionals may not know what’s involved in introducing an automated test tool to a software project, and they may be unfamiliar with the breadth of application that automated test tools have today. Automated Software Testing provides guidance in these areas.

The growth of automated test capability has stemmed in large part from the growing popularity of rapid application development (RAD), a software development methodology that focuses on minimizing the development schedule while providing frequent, incremental software builds. The objective of RAD is to engage the user early and throughout design and development of each build so as to refine the software, thereby ensuring that it more closely reflects the needs and preferences of the user. In this environment of continual changes and additions to the software through each software build, where requirements are encouraged to evolve, software testing takes on an iterative nature itself. Each new build is accompanied by a considerable number of new tests as well as rework to existing test scripts, just as there is rework on previously released software modules. Given the continual changes and additions to software applications, automated software testing becomes an important control mechanism to ensure accuracy and stability of the software through each build.

As noted above, a primary goal of RAD is to shorten the overall development schedule, by addressing the riskiest aspects of development in early builds. As a result, test activities are undertaken at the start of the initial RAD cycle and through each subsequent RAD cycle as well. As noted in Part III of this book, test design and development represent a complex undertaking. A test effort, in fact, may be as time-consuming as the effort required to develop the software application. When the project involves the integration of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products, for example, the test effort may even require more resources than software development. Instances where the test team does not participate in software specification or when test is not initiated soon enough pose a risk to the project. In these situations, potential outcomes include an incomplete software test effort, an insufficient test schedule, and an unplanned extension to the development schedule to accommodate testing.

Much of the test effort required on a project now needs to be supported by automated test tools. Manual testing is labor-intensive and error-prone, and it does not support the same kind of quality checks that are possible with an automated test tool. The introduction of an automated test tool can replace mundane manual test activities with a more efficient and repeatable automated test environment, which itself improves test engineer morale and retention.

Although some automated test tools began as capture and playback tools, the functionality and capabilities of automated test tool suites have been expanding. Automated test capabilities for software products include testing of the graphical user interface, requirements compliance, load performance, code coverage, Web interface, network communications, memory leakage, and more. New capabilities continue to be added to keep pace with the growing demand for test support.

ATLM
This book concentrates on the concerns of the software test professional within the framework of an Automated Test Life-cycle Methodology (ATLM). ATLM is a structured methodology geared toward ensuring successful implementation of automated testing. The ATLM approach mirrors the benefits of modern, rapid application development efforts, where such efforts engage the user early in the development cycle. The end user of the software product is actively involved throughout analysis, design, development, and test of each software build, which is augmented in an incremental fashion.

The ATLM incorporates a multistage process consisting of six components. It supports the detailed and interrelated activities that are required to decide whether to acquire an automated testing tool. The methodology takes into account the process of introducing and optimizing an automated test tool and addresses test planning, analysis, design, development, execution, and management. The scope of the test program is outlined within the test plan, as a top-level description of test approach and implementation. The scope is further refined through the definition of test goals, objectives and strategies, and test requirements. Similar to software application development, test requirements are specified before test design is constructed. Likewise, the test program must be mapped out and consciously designed to ensure that the most efficient and effective tests for the target application are performed. Test design is developed through graphical portrayals of the test effort, so as to give project and test personnel a mental framework on the boundary and scope of the test program.

Test Training
The evolution of automated testing has given birth to new career opportunities for software engineers. In fact, while the demand for automated software test professionals has exploded, community colleges and universities have not produced a reciprocal response to help support industry demand.

Some universities that are typically more proactive in responding to changes in the software industry have already implemented software test and quality assurance courses. For example, George Mason University (GMU) provides software test and quality assurance courses (see the GMU Web site at isse.gmu/ for more information). Kansas State University (KSU) offers students several courses on the subject of software test and quality assurance and other courses that touch on the subject (see the KSU Web site at ksu/).

Purdue University offers two undergraduate courses in software engineering that cover software testing and reliability.Among other areas this center supports research projects. For more information, see the Purdue University Web site at purdue/.

The North Seattle Community College has established one of the most progressive testing curricula in the country. The college offers three levels of software testing courses (introduction, automation, and leadership) and one- and two-year software testing programs.Information concerning additional university and industry training resources is available on the author’s Web site at autotestco/.

The Automated Software Testing textbook is intended to help in classroom instruction on software testing that uses modern automated test tool capabilities. The book provides students with an introduction to the application and importance of software test, and it describes the different kinds of automated tests that can be performed. Instruction continues with the definition of the test approach, the roles and responsibilities of the test team, test planning, test design, test script development, test execution, defect tracking, and test progress reporting.

About the Authors
Automated Software Testing was developed by three software industry professionals.

Elfriede Dustin has performed as a computer systems analyst/programmer developing software applications and utilities, process and data modeling using CASE tools, and system design simulation models. She has experience supporting a variety of system application development projects, including health, financial, logistic, and enterprise information management systems. In addition, Elfriede has been responsible for implementing the entire development life cycle, from requirement analysis, to design, to development, to automated software testing. She has been a test manager and a lead consultant guiding the implementation of automated testing on many projects. Because of her automated test expertise, she has been sought out to help modify the capabilities of commercial test tool products, where her use and feedback on test products has proved invaluable.

Jeff Rashka has managed a multitude of significant information system and systems integration projects. System applications on which he has served as manager include worldwide transportation asset management, enterprise information management, financial management, bar-coded inventory management, and shipboard information systems. Jeff also has process improvement management experience in implementing the guidelines contained within the Software Engineering Institute’s Capability Maturity Model (CMM).

John Paul has worked as a senior programmer/analyst on financial and budgeting systems as well as a host of other information systems. His software development leadership responsibilities have included system analysis and design, application prototyping, and application development using a number of different methodologies and programming techniques. His software development responsibilities have included application testing using automated test tools. John has also assumed a lead role in the performance of year 2000 compliance testing.

The authors have applied their collective knowledge of software engineering, automated testing, and management to develop a book that addresses the pragmatic concerns and information needed by the software test engineer and manager. Automated Software Testing is designed to be a useful—and practical—guide for software engineers and software project managers who are responsible for software test activities.

Book Style and Organization
This book’s organization correlates with the phases, tasks, and steps of the ATLM. The sequence of the book is fashioned in a purposeful way. It addresses the reader as if he or she had just been handed a note giving that individual the responsibility for automated software testing on a project. A first question might be, "What exactly is automated testing, and why do I need it?" Part I of the book answers this question and provides other fundamental instruction allowing the would-be test to approach the new responsibility with confidence. The reader is then guided through the decision to automate testing as well as automated test tool selection and evaluation.

After receiving this fundamental instruction, the test engineer would have several more questions: "What is involved in setting up the tool?" "How do I get the test team in place?" "What early test planning is required?" Part II answers these questions. Specifically, the process for introducing an automated test tool is outlined and guidelines for structuring the test team are provided.

Part III focuses on automated test planning, analysis, design, and test automation (programming). This section of the book addresses test design techniques, which are comparable to the structured software design techniques introduced over the past 20 years. Specifically, it highlights the discipline required in the design of test automation. The goal is to give useful information on test design and test case development, so that the test engineer doesn’t have to discover (by trial and error) how to put together a good test design and set of test procedures.

Part IV helps the reader address several additional questions: "What’s involved in the performance of test?" "How do I manage my test schedule?" "How do I document and track defects?" This section provides guidelines pertaining to test execution, defect tracking, and test program status tracking. A set of best practices for the development and execution of automated test procedures is provided to assist test professionals in executing test activities in an efficient manner.

Overall, the book seeks to allay the concerns of the software test professional within the framework of the ATLM. ATLM is a structured methodology, and one that is geared toward ensuring successful implementation of automated testing. Readers with questions and comments may contact the authors via their home page at autotestco/. This Web site also provides more information on automated software testing and resources that are available to support automated software testing programs.

Generally a good book on how to start Test Automation...
By Erick M. Griffin
Reviewed by Erick Griffin, September 4, 1999
When seeing the title of this book for the first time I must admit I was immediately intrigued by its topic, being a member of Tivoli's Test Automation Group and all. Its title promised that between its covers all would be revealed regarding what automation means to software testing. It does in fact deliver on this main theme rather well. Moreover, depending upon your interest in test automation one might not be able to consider all points brought up by this book applicable to their specific area of expertise. It is however, an excellent place to start!
Below is outline of the book and what the reader will find hidden away in its pages.
Chapter 1. The first chapter discusses some of the more mundane aspects of how to define automated software testing. A necessary evil but for those already familiar with this topic you may want to skip this. Chapter 2. Mostly a discussion on the topic of 'why' software testing automation is so necessary today. Most of what the authors cite as to improving partnerships with development teams and improvements in some of the more important issues of testing are all good lessons that should be learned and clearly understood. This chapter also delves into two other important areas, the real benefits of automation and how to get management support for test automation goals. The latter is most important, the how in making management understand what the correct expectation of automated software testing should be is all important before pursuing any automation strategy. Chapters 3 and 4. Here are the 'meat and potato' chapters on how to correctly evaluate and consider test automation tools. This should be read by anyone who is considering the purchase of a tool that would perform any test automation; and gives a good account of all of the tool areas that must be considered, (e.g. source code testing tools, load/performance/stress test tools). A valuable chapter in learning what the Test Life-Cycle Tools are and what they do. Important for anyone wanting to properly weight an insistent salesperson's marketing hype! Chapter 5. Management only, enough said. Chapters 6 through 9. These are the core chapters of the book and should be read by anyone and everyone interested in overall test considerations. They therefore serve as a guide to overall test planning, development and other considerations, always with a slant on automation. Though most will find these chapters full the normal stuff any verification engineer needs to consider. Chapter 10. People responsible for deploying and managing a software test automation project will want to consider reading this chapter. Here is where the benefits are explained, it gives you a good understanding when and where the payoffs are. One of the more tacit points made in this chapter is that automation is not a short term solution to any problem. It is a long term solution and must become an integral way of life in any verification organization. Appendices. These provide information on How to Test Requirements, Tools That Support the Automated Testing Life Cycle pretty good!, Test Engineer Development good for management and your knowing your own skills and where they fit, A Sample Test Plan in case you've never seen one (I would hope this wasn't the case).
This book should be purchased by anyone who is concerned with test automation. It should be used by those development and verification individuals who need to be concerned with automation topics in their areas to help reduce costs and relieve critical resources to accomplish their group's overall product goals. These individuals include but are not limited to:
All second and first line development and verification management who really need to understand how, when and where automation should be done and why! All senior engineers who need to consider test automation during software design and development. Any company wide organizations whose charter it is to develop and deploy automation tools and technologies to their organizations. And last but not least, any other individuals who might stand to gain from learning how automated software testing might improve their understanding of the need to reduce costs and test resources, while increasing the level of test repeatability and reuse in their areas of verification.
Most organizations establish verification groups only after a product has been developed. These groups are therefore usually well behind the eight ball before they even start to consider such topics as test automation. This book could prevent such organizations from making costly mistakes with test processes and automation that most organizations do when starting.
Finally and most importantly it can be used to help define automated software testing in an organization that is already in place. It can help correct its direction towards the necessary amount of automation a group needs. Most of all it can help reduce the resources needed during verification in the long run, which ultimately drive a better product out the door. This is after all what most customers demand from the computer industry today, isn't it?!

Packed with solid test planning knowledge
By Geordie Keitt
I am not the world's most experienced test manager, but I've been doing it for some time now, and although I knew there was a lot more to learn, I thought I knew the basics. But I had read not even 5 pages of this book before I had my pad of paper out and was scribbling down all the things I needed to do to improve my department. Most of them don't even have to do with test automation! Just software quality management.
The book presents a test automation methodology which is practical, useful, and complete, encompassing the state of the art of test automation as it stands right now (with the exception of some very recent developments in automated testing such as model-based testing, still in its infancy). One small thing I've learned: Our shop has already chosen a tool, so I skipped reading that part of the lifecycle, but wound up coming back to it when the authors discussed how to test the tool when it gets upgraded. I'm anticipating a tool upgrade soon, and there are lot of aspects of my testing that can be negatively affected if I don't plan for them. Now, I'm planning for them and expect to have a smooth transition, and to have confidence that my tool will continue to do the job with the scripts I've already written.
The automation methodology, though, really serves as a focal point around which the authors place a tremendous amount of information about how to perform software quality inspection.
Admittedly I would not take this book to read on the beach. First, the amount of work there is to do to run a test group well is staggering, and the authors are determined to jam it all in here. They make you concentrate. Second, they write using an extremely dry style, which doesn't obscure the points they make, but doesn't inject much life into them either. (I suppose if you want personality, you can always read Boris Beizer. But I still hear my old English major self talking: "Stop using the passive voice! Make somebody DO something!" Forgive my outburst - I feel better now.)
Elfriede Dustin and Jeffrey Rashka have packed this book with knowledge about how to run your testing and your defect-prevention efforts. They don't say it's easy, but they do map the territory very well. I will use and re-use this book for a long time.

The standard for Quality Assurance groups
By Huntley
If your organization is interested in having a mature automated testing process, you need this book. This book will guide you throughout the entire process from thinking about standards to implementing and maintaining them. After several years in QA, I did not have a complete appreciation for all the things that could and should be done until I read this book.
I am using the information available in this book to implement the quality assurance process for my organization and I am making the book required reading for all testers. In addition to all the important information on testing in general, the book also contains many other useful resources including a wonderful sample test plan.
Automated Software Testing: Introduction, Management and Performance is an invaluable resource for everyone involved in software quality assurance, from people thinking about entering the field to seasoned individuals who manage the testing process for their organization. If you are involved in QA or want to be involved, get this book.
