An exciting debut series with plenty of atmosphere, surprises and horror!
By Caroline
Lynda O’Rourke had us all gripped with her dbut, DRUG, the shocks and suspense, the fear and horror. And, she has done it again with DWELL. After cutting it fine and managing to escape the hospital, Cruor Pharma, Kassidy is now on the run from the demonic staff and the police helping to cover up what is happening there. It is certainly not a drug trial in the ‘normal’ sense that she believed she was volunteering for. Now with her veins filling up with the thick, black VA20, her body has survived and is the perfect host for a demon to ‘dwell’. But, Kassidy is also concerned about what will happen once her whole body is full of the stuff.

Max’s brother, Robert, had previously had the VA10 drug and had survived. The Bishop’s house was the last place they knew he was going to and Max was desperate to see his brother again. And so, Kassidy, Max, Raven and Jude aim to visit the Bishop’s house to find out if Robert had made it there, and where else he may have left for.

On their journey they stop off at, Kassidy’s friend, Heather’s flat to clean up. During which there are some scary scenes with plenty of dark horror. One scene happens when Kassidy is in the shower, and although her friends hear the sounds of a struggle, there is nothing else out of place to convince them it was anything paranormal. Kassidy questions what she has experienced but her gut still tells her it was real. The horror scenes are shocking and can make you a little jumpy due to their detailed descriptions that make them realistic, and making it a perfect read for this genre. The reader will certainly be on full alert reading Dwell.

The gang all share a little hope that being at the Bishop’s house, around holiness, will keep out the demons. However, things are not always as they seem. And, staying with the Bishop and Mrs. Gables was a little awkward and eerie. There was a dark atmosphere from the large, quiet but old home they lived in. It was unclear whether Mrs. Gables wanted them to leave or stay. She doesn’t seem too pleased of their arrival. And what is it with keeping the fires constantly lit in every room? Not to mention the amount of birds they have getting stuck in the chimneys, and the noise from the derelict third floor. The atmosphere of the house and of the dialogue between the characters is brilliant for creating the tension and fear of the reader.

Aside from the horror, Dwell is also quite an emotional part of the gang’s ordeal. Kassidy is frustrated, angry, scared and exhausted from everything they have all been through, what she has witnessed and what her mind is trying to understand about it all. Lynda O’Rourke‘s language and description is so powerful and moving at this point that the reader feels everything that Kassidy does as she reflects on what has happened to her and her friends. We feel her despair as well as her strength.

(Whilst her friends are taking some time to rest)“… Why couldn’t I rid myself of these awful images that were screwing up my head? Why wouldn’t my brain just shut down and give me some peace? I could feel myself filling with anger – frustration. I just wanted to sleep. I wanted to escape my own mind and sleep was the only place I could forget. I kicked out at the chair. It topple over – clattering onto the bare floorboards. I didn’t care if I woke the others. Why should they sleep so peacefully? I was fired up. Ready for a fight. I wanted to hit someone – anyone. I wanted to vent my anger. Make them feel the pain I was suffering – hurt them like I was hurting – spill their blood like mine had. I grabbed large clumps of my hair in both fists and yanked down hard, gritting my teeth. I wanted to scream at the top of my voice – yell so hard – go on some mad frenzy – smashing everything up that I came across. I wanted everyone to feel my pain.”

This also shows that sometimes the power of writing in first person is very strong. When the reader knows exactly what is racing through the characters minds it makes it so much easier to connect with and understand them. It brings out more realism and the reader can place themselves in the story, making the danger, the emotions and the action so much more intense. Lynda O’Rourke has used this brilliantly.

Kassidy hasn’t had a perfect life, with her dad being an alcoholic, now this, and so she reaches the point where she is beginning to feel completely broken. She doesn’t know what to do, she just needs someone, some comfort. There is a ‘moment’ between her and Jude as Jude’s character begins to show his more serious, sincere and caring side. However, Kassidy doesn’t really know what she is doing, and it is over before anything serious has begun. I loved this scene. It shows perfectly how Kassidy’s character is flawed, giving in with a moment of weakness. It is something that many of us can relate to or at least understand, making her more believable. It was also great to see the different side of Jude and see his character and his relationship with the others develop.

But, what of Doctor Ben Fletcher? He’s a host to an evil demon, yet he did help Kassidy to escape. Her true feelings, I feel, lie with him. But how can she possibly be anywhere near him? She knows that the true human person is still present inside of him, but the demon could change all of that. Is there still a part of her that wants to see him again?

“…If Ben… had no control over his actions or couldn’t remember the things he did, then could I really blame him for what had happened to me?”

Their hope of survival lies with Doctor Langstone, a demon, yet a doctor who was against the drug trials at Cruor Pharma and left because of them. Maybe he can offer answers, or will be drawn to the group from his demon side. Either way, there will be plenty more horror and surprises. I cannot wait to read book 3, Demon!!

A copy of DWELL was provided by the author for the purpose of a fair and honest review.

You don't know who is good or evil
By Heidi Hudson
Another sensational read by Linda O'Rourke. This follow up to her debut book Drug blew me away. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Every heart pounding page-turning moment I was filled with dread and anxiety not knowing what was going to happen. I'm not sure where she got this gift of writing but she really truly is blessed. Kassidy and her friends are getting deep into this crazy demon world. You don't know who is good or evil. No one can be trusted. I can't wait for Demon. I am officially hooked on this talented author!

Book highly recommended by NY Digital Art Teacher
By A Customer
I was reading the January issue of Yahoo Internet Life magazine and saw that [...] was chosen as one of the "Top 100 Web Sites of 2002" for Best Original Web Art. I was quite surprised that a graduate school department site was chosen over sites like Rhizome, the Whitney, San Franciso MoMA and other high profile Net Art sites. I visited the site and saw that the students did great work and had won over 60 other awards, including the 2001 Leonardo Award of Excellence, the Smithsonian American Art Museum's New Media/New Century Award, Prix Ars Electronica, Sundance Online Festival, SIGGRAPH and others. I saw that Bruce Wands was chair of the department and I bought his book. I found the book to be excellent, easy to read and very helpful on the creative side of new media production. The chapter on creativity was worth the price of the book alone. The book is now required reading in my graduate and undergraduate digital art classes. The interviews are with top people in the field (including Isaac Kerlow) and are really interesting, giving added dimension to Mr. Wands' writing. The book also has an excellent annotated bibliography for those interested in exploring the chapter subjects in depth. I also own the Pocock/Rosebush book and the Kerlow book. Both are highly technical books that are only about computer animation and do not have the breadth or the wealth of practical information the Wands book has. Based on Mr. Wands' superb track record with his students, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be more creative and develop quality new media content.

Test group rated this book as a very poor text.
By A Customer
Test group rated this book very low: Primary Text = 1, Reference Text = 0, Companion Text = 2.
We conducted a review of seven recent books on digital media for a large university here in Michigan. The criteria was to review each book as a possible text, reference or companion for pre-college and introductory college classes. We assembled a group of college and high school teachers as well as separate group of students.
The panel of students responded very negatively to this book. Their expressed concerns were about the lack of structure and that it did not have enough technical information. They did not find the personality sidebars interesting or relevant. Other students found the tone of the book "condescending." It received the lowest scores of all the books reviewed.
Some of the teachers were more positive but their assessment of this book as a primary text was very low because it does not present facts or techniques in a way that allows the teacher to either assign specific reading assignments or to test students on the information. Other teachers expressed concern that much of the technical information was not accurate or that it was too vague and not clearly presented. This book was not considered adequate to be a primary text in high school or college.
On the other hand, the teachers that were relatively new to digital technologies were slightly more positive, finding the book "light and a easy to read." This group found the sidebars more interesting because they related to the questions about making the "transition to the digital relm." A subject that the students found to be "dated and boring."
Our two highest rated books by both groups were far more technical and advanced; the Rosebush/Pocock Handbook and the second edition of Kerlows The Art of 3D Computer Animation. In both instances the perceived value was the blend of scholarship and technical clarity. Students found both books relevant to their concerns and teachers were impressed by the presentation and excellent writing. These are two very valuable books that will be relevant resourses for many years.

The Flash Speeds In A New Direction!
By S. R.
This trade paperback represents the beginning of writer Geoff Johns' now classic run following the departure of fan-favorite Mark Waid. Unlike the previous printing of Blood Will Run (which also collected issues #170-176, plus a story from 'The Flash Secret Files'), this updated version reprints the out of print Iron Heights one-shot special, as well. This new addition is pivotal since it showcases the Flash's villains, or rogues, escaping from the Iron Heights prison and banding together to torment the Flash. This is technically the second volume collecting Johns' Flash work, the first being Vol. 0: Wonderland, which collected issues #164-169. However, that storyline was a rather mundane effort from Johns with very little bearing on the continuing saga that would be fleshed out during the tenure of his 5 years on the book. For all intents and purposes, this collection is the best starting point for those wishing to read the genesis of Johns' Flash stories.

Unlike most other collections, which reprints a major storyarc, this paperback collects narratives that represent the seeds of ongoing storylines to be developed later. The first tale has the Flash battling a killer cult that sees him as a God, while the next has the Flash racing to save a baby who might be his own. When Geoff Johns took over the writing chores on this book, his primary mission was to boost the Flash's rogues gallery to new heights of fear and respect. Easier said than done with names like Captain Cold, Weather Wizard, and Captain Boomerang. However, throughout the course of Johns' stories, the rogues were given a uniformed purpose as well as individual personalities. The back stories for some of the villains highlighted troubled pasts and some rather coherent reasoning for the silly costumes and monikers. By making such sympathetic and driven characters, Johns managed to elevate the stories beyond just good versus evil. The artwork in this collection also warrants mentioning. The majority of the art is by Scott Kolins, whose cartoony approach to the Flash might take some adjustment. Kolins does not render shadows, and as such, the foreground, middleground, and background all seem to exist on the same plane. Even the color palette chosen to enhance the drawings are primarily washed-out pastels, with the Flash's costume representing the boldest colors. This might very well have been intentional, but it makes for rather drab visuals. The art is far from mediocre but better artwork has graced the pages of this title. Speaking of which, Ethan Van Sciver's highly detailed pencils on the 'Iron Heights' story cannot be overlooked. Sciver's work stands in stark contrast to Kolins, and readers might be taken aback by the radical shift in visual styles. Sciver is a master of anatomy, architecture, and dynamic storytelling through his art, and it should be no surprise that he was selected to draw Barry Allen's reintroduction to the DC Universe in The Flash: Rebirth mini-series. A responsibility he has some practice with having done the same with Hal Jordan a few years back in a storyline also written by Geoff Johns.

DC has managed to do something rather remarkable with Geoff Johns' Flash stories, and that is collect them all in trade paperback from. For those interested in continuing on from this paperback, the remaining collections are Vol. 2: Rogues, Vol. 3: Crossfire, Vol. 4: Blitz, Vol. 5: Ignition, Vol. 6: The Secret of Barry Allen, and Vol. 7: Rogue War. Be warned, though, that some of these collections are now out of print and highly costly so it will be beneficial to shop around. Geoff Johns is among the best writers in comics today and is constantly in high demand by DC to helm many of their most lucrative projects. But before having become a household name in comics, Johns carved out a niche in the superhero genre with his pioneering work on the Flash. These collections offer fans a chance to re-live some of the best stories to ever showcase the fastest man alive!

Still a Flash fan
By Dillon Johnstone
Honestly, I'd never read any Flash comics/books. I simply grew up being entertained by his personality via the Justice League cartoon. However, even though he is usually put on the shelf in comparison to Superman and Batman, he has some interesting storylines on his own. This volume is a good ice breaker. Despite being "B" type villains, some of them are down right interesting, and put some of the more well known Batman villains to shame.

If you haven't yet, I would definitely say that you should give Flash a try. It would be money and time well spent.

OVERALL GRADE: B
By MISTER SJEM
A good overview of Flash being a regular Joe with his identity known to the locals and having regular issues with his wife and the police.

A good spread of villains appear, too, especially The Rogues.

Respectable and solid artwork.

Weak story line
By Just Sayin
Dialogue and some background did not seem to fit the period of the story. Story line was farcical. Not my favorite book.

Awful writing.
By A Customer
This is a contemporary novel placed in the 1890s. The language is modern, the attitudes are strictly 21st century. This lends an unfortunate disbelief to the story. People simply did not talk openly about sex, or try to match an aristocrat's daughter with the family cook, or disrespect one's parents. But the worst offense of this book is the slaughter of the English language. Where was the editor? Grammar and spelling are not this author's fortes.

Very poorly written
By Lisa
This book is supposed to be a period piece, unfortunately, throughout the book the characters' language is very contemporary and completely out of place for the specified time period. In one of her books the author has a character wonder if a ring was an actual diamond ring or if it was cubic zirconia in the late 1800's! Additionally, the conversations between the characters are incredibly stiff and unrealistic. I ended up skipping whole paragraphs to get through this book, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Eve Was Framed: Women and British Justice, by Helena Kennedy

Eve Was Framed offers an impassioned, personal critique of the British legal system from a leading barrister, now a QC, well-known for her forthright views on miscarriages of justice. Helena Kennedy has chosen to look at the treatment of women in our courts - at the prejudices of judges, the misconceptions of jurors, the labyrinths of court procedures and the influence of the media. But the inequities she uncovers could apply equally to any disadvantaged group - to those whose cases are subtly affected by race, class poverty or politics, or who are burdened, even before they appear in court, by misleading stereotypes. In this book we meet women as lawyers, women as victims, women as defendants, women as killers. Its coverage is highly topical, considering, for example, Sara Thornton's defence of cumulative abuse against the charge of murdering her husband, or examining the implications of the Kennedy-Smith rape trial - but the lessons it teaches are enduring. Drawing on her wide knowledge of British procedure, and considering initiatives in Europe and America, Helena Kennedy shows that there is something very wrong with British justice, and suggests new ways of thinking for the future.

Thought provoking
By NR
It's a sad commentary that such circumstances still exist in this day & age among groups - ie Northern European & offshoots - that have convinced us that women have an equal place in society. It's a sadder commentary that women believe this disinformation spread by the powers that be. This book rips the cover off and exposes the true, ugly underside of reality. It is time we all stop deluding ourselves.

Passable but on the dirty side.
By Coconut Inc.
The cover art is different from how it is pictured, which disappoints. Moreover, it is dirty and I had to wipe it down with a few napkins. Needless to say, they came away grey. Also, the pages look very worn. it has been used but more than once! I know because the warehouse did not even bother to get rid of the library catalogue stuck on the first page. So buy this product if one is trying to save, however know that there are better and cleaner used editions out there.

One of the books I really rate
By Amelia Pasch
I have had this book for a long time (since before Amazon existed) and keep referring back to it. I also pass on information about the book to anyone who comments on the unfairness of the so-called justice meated out to women. I believe Eve Was Framed is a book dealing with jurisprudence that even the lay person can undertstand. I recommend it frequently.
