Only 50 Words!

If your little one likes Thomas and is beginning to read, this book only has 50 words and lots of repetition. It involves a race between Thomas and Gordon.

It would be best for a kindergarten and early first grade reader depending on if your child learns to read fluently in kindergarten. The illustrations are colorful. There's not much plot as it is just a race.

There are flashcards to cut up with the vocabulary at the end of the book. Most words are one syllable except for a few like tunnel.

This is a train book. Most importantly it is a Thomas the Tank Engine book and to a 3 year old's eyes, nothing is as exciting as a race between two of his steamy friends: little Thomas and mighty Gordon.

While others have noted that the race ends with Thomas winning through trickery, I like to think of it as Thomas winning by *thinking* rather than shear brawn. (What kind of a `real' race is it anyway between a huge steamy and little ole Thomas? Gordon might as well have been racing Toby the steam tram.)

As far as the text is concerned, the rhyme is, as noted elsewhere, awkward. I believe the author would have been better off using 54+ words to get better verse, but I guess that did not fit into the magic scheme of 50.

What does work is the `catch me, catch me, go, go, go" action-rhythm and the nicely drawn pictures. Very addicting to Thomas aficionados.

"Look, a tunnel!

A tunnel for me!

A tunnel Gordon did not see!"

"I may be slow,

You may be fast.

But I am first,

And you are last!"

As we have not begun reading, I can not speak to the effectiveness of the games at the end. Certainly, I agree with the reviewer who stated that the `rectangles' are small and would take awhile to cut out. I would probably just copy those same words on 3x5 cards.

poor description; string arrangement

I needed a wind score, and I received a string score. When reviewing my order, I realized there was no description of the product that included the arranger of the string score I received. About the Author

Elena Bodrova is a senior researcher at Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) in Denver, Colorado.� Prior to her coming to the United States, she was a senior researcher at the Russian Center for Educational Innovations and the Russian Institute for Preschool Education.� She received her Ph.D. from the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences, Moscow, Russia, and her M.A. from Moscow State University.� In addition to her work with Dr. Leong, she co-authored the book, For the Love of Words:�Vocabulary Instruction That Works, Grades K-6 (Jossey-Bass) with Diane E. Paynter and Jane K. Doty.

Deborah J. Leong is a professor of psychology and the director of the Center for Improving Early Learning (CIEL) at Metropolitan State College of Denver.� She received her Ph.D. from Stanford University and her M.Ed. from Harvard University.� In addition to her work with Dr. Bodrova, she is co-author with Oralie McAfee of Assessing and Guiding Young Children's Development and Learning (Allyn & Bacon) that is now in its fourth edition.

Vygotsky blows Piaget out of the water!

This is an excellent resource. I think it is a tragedy that Vygotsky's educational and developmental philosophies have taken this long to be distributed in America and taken seriously. We would have a completely different educational system and level of achievement in our public schools were the teachings in this book made the norm and mastery of it was required before anyone got ahold of our young children in schools (or in the home in the role of parents generally or homeschooling parents). There is nothing I would have wanted to know before purchasing the product because I was familiar with Vygotsky theories from graduate studies in clinical psychology. Again, an excellent book. So much more relevant and quite frankly, accurate and helpful than any methods based soley on child-led learning and/or Piaget.

If You Don't Understand The Vygotskian Approach...

...look no further than this book. Even though reading Lev Vygotsky's own words in MIND IN SOCIETY is irreplaceable, most of us teachers have little time or patience to wade through that theoretical complexity.

Thus, Bordrova and Leong give us an excellent way to both understand V's theory and how it applies to each set of early childhood age ranges. Personally, I the infant and toddler sections are the most valuable because embellishing intersubjectivity at the earliest possible point of development will increase the child's ability to navigate and learn within an increasingly complex social setting.

Lots of good information and practical ideas!

I used this book as part of my professional development for the past school year. As an educator of young special needs children, I found activities based in theory which I've already implemented successfully in my classroom. It's not an easy read and will not give you "10 Easy Ways to Implement Vygotsky Into Your Classroom"; you'll need to dig a little, but it will be worth your while!

Started strong ended weak

In many ways The Crucible is a disappointment.
What's started off as great writing, an interesting new plot, interesting Characters was overshadowed by flaws by the end of book 2 (episode 2).

Pros:
-Cool technology
-Interesting protagonists
-Decent editing, good chronology, good grammar
-Romantic aspects of plot done fairly well
-Interesting plot with twists and turns
-Decent moral framework
-No ludeness

Cons:
-Galactic scale empire with only a few hundred capital ships???? What?? Milky Way has 100,000,000,000 planets....and only 500 cruisers? Lol!! That makes no sense. This theme of everything is local and small feeling but at the same time the entire galaxy continues and festers into gangrene and never gets better.
-Technology explanation is inaccurate. Electrifying light does not make it a light bridge....or we would have light bridges today. But I sympathize with her wanting to create light bridges that's fine you could have avoided the explanation I would have suspended disbelief
-Character development becomes to predictable and at some points makes no sense. For example, Lady Argoza is supposed to be fair and charitable, gracious but no good explanation is given for why she kidnapped Shepherd. Then when she blows herself up, it doesn't add up why she did that when she was obsessed with surviving so much that she kidnaps Shepherd. Then there's the whole disconnect between Alyssa coming out of her introverted state. I can go on and on, Shepherd doesn't make a good excuse for why he should join the resistance. Annabelle doesn't fit her Character of rule keeping not picky with her boisterous dialogue with Shepherd.
-Author favors too many female protagonists without a good explanation. Almost all officers in the Navy happen to be women.
-Cure for compound 78 reliance needs a better explanation.
-Writing becomes very slow after they Nathan joins the resistance. This could have easily been 600 page novel instead of 840.

Excellent for an ebook

This is a good manual for vintage traditional tailoring techniques. A lot of great tips and worthwhile reading. 4 stars because there are several OCR errors ("basting" transcribed as "fasting") and as typical with manuals of this period, not as many diagrams as a modern reader would probably prefer. I'm glad I bought this ebook.

About the Author
Adrian Michael is from Denver, CO. He began writing when he was exposed to talented poets and storytellers at his father's cultural center at the age of 10. Great writers such as Ralph Ellison, Richard Wright, Sonia Sanchez, Langston Hughes, and other influential African-American writer's known and unknown, have influenced Adrian in his attempts at producing creative works. loamexpressions is his first book.

Just finished reading my brother's book Lōm Expressions!! If you have already purchased the book make sure you take the time out to read it. It should take you no more than an hour to complete. Now, if you haven't purchased the book I recommend that you go ahead and do so. :) The words found within will have you deep in thought trying to decrypt what is being said. Adrian Michael leaves it all on the pages with his intellect and uses every word in a majestic manner. Do not miss out on an up and coming author/poet/star's first masterpiece in the form of a book. I am so proud of you bro!
